given that mukesh sang less than 1000 (?) songs, it appears that the
outputs of both of the above-referenced gentlemen would probably be
less than 500 collectively (those with more time and other resources
are welcome to contradict with facts, or without). with such a small
population, it would probably be easy to debate.

to make the debate less partisan, maybe the ap-ites and keralites
(none that i have seen in rmim for quite some time now) need to hold
their fire until the non-partisan folks are done with the thread.

my pick - yesudas.

I doubt whether the original poster (I don't feel like
describing him just as an anonymous "bharateeya") had
your kind of interpretation in mind.

I think what he meant was a choice between SPB and
Yesudas, with reference to their hindi film songs.
Mukesh is excluded from the options.

Also, "non-partisan" should perhaps be interpreted as
someone who is NOT from either Andhra Pradesh or
Kerala (or maybe those who do not know either Telugu
or Malayalam). Just my opinion.

My pick too would be Yesudas. On a related note :
I heard his Malayalam songs prior to his foray in
hindi film music. Of course, I don't know Malayalam.

I cannot stand SPB in Hindi. Altho' KJY has a strong accent, he has
selected
songs that suit his accent and skill and they are far far better than
SPB. Altho'
SPB didn't have that luxury, he is more a commercial singer like KK and
technically
very inferior to KJY.

IMO, both are quite mediocre when it comes to singing in Hindi.
(Yesudas is perhaps slightly better). Their songs in southern films
and devotional albums are, however, fantastic.

The biggest joke was Mohd Rafi singing in "Akbar Salim Anarkali" (a telugu
movie). The MDs decided they had enough of his murdering the words
(pronounciation was horrible) and that ended Rafi's adventure singing in
telugu movies atleast.

I know of Lata singing in Aakhari Poratham (Nagarjuna, Sridevi). The song
goes like, "tella chiira ki....". Her diction was pretty ok.

Now, the telugu audiences just dont seem to care for the language anymore.
With Sukhwinder, Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijit etc etc ruling the roost
in Telugu film industry. I have stopped listening to Telugu songs for that
reason.

Are you aserious that these guys are ruling Telgu film industry?
They can't even sing Hindi songs properly. But on the other
hand with all the noise and scenes changing every second,
our mind is not allowed to concentrate on music and
any singer goes. I am guessing Telgu songs are of the
same type as Hindi songs - 50 male and 50 female dancers
in ever changing costumes.

There are more films ... my favorite Rafi Telugu song (the first
one I ever heard) is "naa madi ninnu pilichindi gaan{a}mayi".
Listen to the way he pronounces the 'N' in "vENu gaanamayi" :)
I LOL every time I hear that!

one in Geet - aaja tujhko pukaare mere geet re]

I know what he was trying to say. I wanted to draw specific
attention to the fact that he was being very disingenuous (IMO)
with his "no ap-ites or keralites" requirement. What difference
can someone's geographical affiliations or linguistic knowledge
make to his/her opinion of KJY or SPB as a *Hindi* film singer?

Yesudas's voice is (was, isn't any more) better than SPB's,
and Hindi accent, worse. But then, SPB's Hindi song singing
style often gets on my nerves. Of the two, I prefer KJY.

That is right. The music is jarring to say the least. I watch quite a few
telugu movies and all of them get the songs fast forwarded. (most of the
movie too in fact)

It is definitely that and worse.

Shri Bharateeya had merely requested that "others" may
be permitted to air their views first. Andhrites/
Keralites would of course have their say subsequently.

Geographical/linguistic affiliations do indeed affect
people's perceptions. We see this in every walk of
life, so how can the field of film music remain
unaffected ? Apart from other considerations, I think
both SPB and KJY have given a much better account of
themselves in Telugu/Malayalam films. It is, there-
fore quite possible that the perception of people from
these two geographical areas (about the two singers'
prowess in Hindi films) may be somewhat coloured by
their impression of their Telugu/Malayalam singing.
Again, just my opinion.

She was also okay in the 50's song nidurapora tammuDa (Santanam).
MD was Susarla Dakshunamurhty.

Talat's pronounciation in Telugu was also okay.

I beg to differ!!!
Yesudas is *anything* but mediocre in Hindi movies. His voice his amazingly
crystal clear.
As for pronunciation, take these 2 besides his well-known songs for Amol
Palekar movies -

(1) Koi gaata main so jaata from Aalap
(2) Ab charagoon ka koi kaam nahi, tere chehare se roshani si hai, a duet
with Lata from Baawari.

First song is by Dr Hariwansh Rai Bachchan, and his Hindi is not easy, but
Yesudas does an excellent job!!!!
Just my thoughts....

Udit Narayan and others also sing in kannada. And kannada film
lyricists are putting Dhwamsalekha to shame by bending backwards to
accomodate the singers' poor kannada by adding hindi and english words
to the songs. The music directors (hee hee!) do their bit by adding
lot of 'ooh's and 'aah's. Bring back SPB, PBS, Janaki, Susheela,
Chi.Udayashankar, M.Rangarao, GK Venkatesh etc anyday.

Deviating a bit from the current topic in this thread:

What do you(RMIM-ers) think about Manna Dey's rendition of
'maanasamaine varu' in Chemmeen? I don't understand the
lyrics but I remember the picturisation of the song (IIRC
it was at sunset by the sea) and the song conveys a
very pacific feeling.

Interestingly, SalilC had Yesudas sing the Bengali
version of this song about 15 years later. It was
a duet with SabitaC titled 'naam shakuntalaa taar'
from the film 'Srikanter Will'. However, Manna Dey's
version sounds superior to me than the Yesudas version
of the song.

It is to be hoped that it is not the geographical /

I am not familiar with the native characteristics of Malayalee diction.
According to a distant Malayalee relative of mine, Manna Dey did a very
competent job, although it was fairly obvious (from the rendition) that
the singer was by no means a Malayalee.
