My personal research of conviction is: Never was she a singing voice - 1842-48 = 7 years. Film Veer Ghatotgach ('49) had Mohantara's playback for Meena Kumari who had turned 17 by thence.Further on...it was all playback everywhere.
The critical years of 1941-47 of Meena Kumari (from the ages. 9 - 15 years) when she was just 'an ordinary character artiste, without any sort of base-name.
Duniya Ek Sarai ('47) had Begum Para in the heroine's role while Meena Kumari was the 'other one' in supporting role. Two or three songs were filmed on Meena Kumari and Columbia Records label the voice identity as 'Meena' on record.
The identity 'Meena' could be anyone !

How is Professor SS or GK-II, or my friend, Sultan Arshad of Karachi; or the PROs of Meena Kumari establish her as a singing voice ???
In Piya Ghar Aja ('47), the heroine was Meena Kumari opposite hero Karan Dewan whom sang his own songs even on record. This film, once again had a no of solos of 'Meena'...confronting the mysterious voice identity !
The votaries (PROs) of Meena Kumari once again get stumped. Listen to the songs and unravel the mystery, friends/music lovers. Who is this MEENA ??
This film, Piya Ghar Aja/'47 had also a duet on record, labelled Saroj / Agha.
Any idea of the singing voices !!
Bichhade Balam ('48) too has a few solos-n-duets of Meena , the mystery singing voice.
If one were to go by LISTENING alone - opinions do differ individually - depending upon the imbibed experience and the analyzing capability in 'voice repertoires'. Unfortunately, many lack in this regard and thus their verdicts can safely be dumped. This in turn would leave only a few concerted listeners, like ME to go ahead and teach the world accordingly.
The singing voice play backed for Meena Kumari in Duniya Ek Sarai/47, Piya Ghar Aja/'47 & Bichhade Balam/'48 is/was one very less known voice named; Meena Chopra. She sang only for MD : Bulo C.Rani. She also sang for Hansraj in 1947 for the other film. Both the music directors were paid employees of Ranjit Movie Tone as well as colleagues.
