Music has a language of its own. So we often hear singers singing in
languages other than their own. Apart from Hindi, of course. :-)
In Marathi too, we have singers from Hindi Film music and other languages
singing good songs. I am mentioning some famous songs here.
The first name which comes to my mind is Hemantda ! Hridaynath used him
twice. Both times in "koLeegeet" or the "fisherman song". His voice and
his pronunciation suited the song very much. Both the songs are well-known,
but the first one "mi dolkar dolkar darya_cha raajaa" is known to many
non-Marthis too. It's a very sweet sweet tune. A marvel.
Second one is from a film "Ha kheL saavalyancha" and the song is "gomu
sangateena, majhya to yeshil ka". This too is also quite popular.
In the same film the title song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor, and he too
has sounded quite nice here. There are many MahndraK songs in Marathi,
but I am not able to remember any more. But the general consesus is, he
sounded the best among non-Marathi singers.
Sudha Malhotra has sung a few Bhavgeets, the best naturally being the
ultra-famous "shukra taaraa mand waaraa", a duet with Arun Date. She
too sounded perfect. Perhaps the Punjabi singers have no problem in
mastering Marathi pronunciation. :-)
Rafi also has sung many songs, but unfortunately, does not sound good
at all. The accent is quite bad. His one song, though, is very famous,
"shodhi_si maanavaa, raauLi mandiri". The tune is excellent. I have a
cassette of Rafi's Marathi songs. My general opinion is, he fails to
deliver the right punch.
Kishore OTOH has done a wonderful job in the only one Marathi song I
know of him. It's from a film by Sachin, picturised on Ashok Saraf and
Charusheela SabaLe (daughter of Shaahir SaabaLe). The MD were Anil-Arun,
where the Arun is late Arun Paudwal, husband of Anuradha Paudwal. She
has sung this song with Kishore - "jagu kasa tujhya_vina me raaNi ga".
Nice tune, and Kishore sounds abs perfect. Amazing. This, I am positive,
was his first song in Marathi. I don't know if he sang any song later.
There may not be any, as this itself was quite late in his life.
Vani Jayram has done wonders in her two songs with Kumar Gandharva. She
sounds so sweet and melodious. Singing with Kumar is not a joke. You must
lisetn to the songs "riNanubandha_chya" and "uTHi uTHi gopaaLaa". Real
treat to ears. These songs are also extremely well known.
I don't know whether Suman Kalyanpur can be included here. She has many
songs to her credit. Her "Keshava maadhava" is very very famous. In fact
Lata included it in her 4pack of "Maajhi aawadati gaaNi"(my fav songs)!!!
That's all from the top of my head. No matter what the Goans say about
the Mangeshkars, Abhisheki, BhoLes and other singers, these are very
much Marathi singers ! :-) :-) Also ignore the Kannada people if they
tell you some of the best Marathi singers belong to them :-) :-). All
the Gandharvas and Bhimsen are ours :-) :-) :-)

....btw Jitendra Abhisheki's non-Marathi music is all I've heard (devotional
things and Hindustani classical / semi-vlassical) and I've generally enjoyed
listening to it.

Another nice MK song is "sur tech chedita, geet umatale nave".
The movie name escapes me at the moment, but it stars Ramesh Deo, Seema
and Indrani Mukherjee.

other non-filmi songs by him?

Two other melodies by Suman that I can recall at the moment are
"Paakhara zaa, door deshi" and "naavika re, waara waahe re". Very
sweet songs. Interestingly, I think when she sang Marathi songs, she
did not sound like Lata at all.

You just have to listen carefully to Kumar Gandharva's

the way he says "gopaala", to know where he belongs! :-) :-)

in fact, this song has a Bengali version too - the same singers, the same
MD and very similar meaning. It goes like

chhol bhaashi shab kichhu taagya.......
I don't know of any other such pair with one marathi song (there are lots
with hindi-bengali, of course). anyone ?

Navika re is not by Suman Kalyanpur; it's by Shyama Chittar, who is
Suman's younger sister.

Thanks Abhay for such wonderful contributions! When I was in Pittsburgh
(1969-75) I had a maraaThii roommate, Shashikant Phatak. He used to play
this song and a few others over and over again. He continued until the
song
and I became one. It was an exhilirating experience. I learnt some
maraaThii
and taught some panjaabii.
I haven't heard this song since 1980 or so, when my maraaThii tape got
spoiled.
You brought this song up and now I cannot get rid of it from my
tan-man-dhan
and man-vachan-karm. Thanks a lot. The "DoLakar" and I are happily
united again.

There are many male marathi singers apart from the two
just mentioned.
Sudhir phadke, Vasantrao Deshpande, Ajit Kadkade, Mukund
phansalkar, Ramdas Kamat, Shrikant pargaonkar to name a few.

These two songs are from the play 'Dev Deenaghari Dhavala'. You are
absolutely right about venturing to sing with Kumar. He also sang two of
Kavi Anil's poems , 'Ajooni rusun aahe' and 'Aaj achanak gath pade'.
Has anyone heard Parveen Sultana singing marathi bhavgeet 'Rasika tuzyach
saathi, me ek geet gaate'? it is fabulous.
How about Ustad Abdul Karim Khansaheb singing Marathi NatyaGeets.
Marathi Natya Sangeet is also priviledged to receive support and direction
by the likes of Ustad Alladiya Khan Saheb, Ustad Ahmadjan Thirakava and
many more.
I have heard rendition of 'chaalo Man Ganga Jamuna teer' mentioned in
Shehal Oza's post by D.V.Paluskar, I was not aware of VishnuPant Pagnis
rendition.

I like Mahendra Kapoor's from Ha Khel Savalyancha
music by Hridyanath Mangeshkar
Ha Chandra Na Swayambhu
Ravi Tej Vahato Ha
Grahatlya Nabhi cha
Abhishaap Bhogato ha ... Ha Khel Sawlyancha
This film also has a song by Hemant Kumar and Asha

All the songs in Dada Kondke's movies (music by Ram Laxman)
were by Mahendra Kapoor.

There is a casette ' Suman Geete' which has a collection
of some of best Bhavgeet by Suman Kalyanpur.
It's hard to call Suman a Non-Maharashtrian. She's a
Konkani brought up in Bombay. So her Marathi would be
perfect.
One other Non Marathi singer is Sudha Malhotra. Her
Bhavgeets with Arun Date are memorable.

Strangely, most of the Marathi Bhavgeets are sung by
female singers (Lata, Asha, Usha, Anuradha Paudwal, Suman
Kalyanpur, Sudha Malhotra ).

Kishori Amonkar has sung quite a few Marathi bhavgeet.
I think Hindi films Ardha Satya had her Marathi song
in the backgroung. (Jaeen Vicharit Ranaphula)
Were there any memorable Marathi songs by
Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi. Rafi had
a bunch , but they were not that great.
Are you sure? When I was in India this past summer, I heard this song on
a cassette set of her Marathi songs.

Kishori has EXACTLY 2 maraaThi bhaavageet. One you have already
mentioned and the other is IMHO the better one "re shyaamasundaraa
raajasaa manamohanaa". Music is by the one and the only baaLaasaaheb.
Kishori has a number of maraaThI bhaktigeet to her credit. The tape is
called "rangee rangala shreeranga."

yes sir ! "mehendeechyaa paanaawara" by Lataa is also in baangalaa. same
MD, same meaning, same singer. (dont know the words though.)

Prabha Atre... Tell us more about the Mangeshkars', Arati Ankalikar and
Kishori Amonkar, Pandit Paluskar and Malini Rajurkar, Vasantrao Deshpande
and Veena Sahasrabuddhe... These very names have music in them...
Yes, tell us about 'Gandharvas and Bhimsen'... We shall listen proudly and

Tell us about Abhangs and bhavgeets, Natya sangeet and Lok geets...
Recommend us some good recordings...

Hridaynath Mangeshkar's "mendichya panavar" sung by Lata

it is available in the tape Bengali Aadhunik Geet sung by Lata.

On the reverse side of the LP record "dol dol dol" (the Bengali version
of "mi dolkare, dolkare"), is the Bengali version of the Marathi song
"sarangaa, raja sarangaa" by Lata also. I don't recall the Bengali
words however.

Oh ! I remember this movie ! Saw it when I was too young to understand
what is 'Madhuchandra" :-) Quite enjoyable though. It *ed one of the
legends of Marathi Theatre - Kashinath GhaNekar. Another song which I
remember from the same movie
- he chinche_che zaad dise maj chinaar vrikhsa_pari
disashi tu, nava_taruNi Kashmiri
Very enjoyable song. Maybe this too is by MahendraK.
Was this movie remade into Hindi ?
Thanks for mentioning Vani Jayram songs and also the GeetaD song.

I thought all who have been on a honeymoon (and many who haven't, as well :))
would never forget "madhuchandraachi raat". :)) Isn't that by Mahendra
Kapoor? He has also sung for Vasant Desai, for example,
jinkoo ki.nwaa maroo.n
from 'Chhota Jawan' and
divasaa ujeDee
with Usha Mangeshkar from 'Raja Shivachhatrapati'. Since we are talking
about non-Marathi singers, let me note Bhimsen Joshi's (:)) "hari viThThala"
from the same film.

By him, I dont' know, but by her, yes (non-Marathi thread, after all!) :)
Vani Jairam has sung a few geets composed by Dashrath Pujari:

You forgot Geeta Dutt. I don't know how many songs she has sung in
Marathi, but here is one (and what can be more quintessentially Marathi :)):
gaNapati bappaa morayaa
from film 'Swapna Tencha Lochani,' lyrics by Shanta SheLke, and music
by Aadil Ahmad.
Ashok
Sushama Sreshta has sung couple of Marathi Baal Geet.
(She is half Marathi- Half Nepali).Remember her from
Aa Gale Lag Jaa (Tera Mujhshe Hai Pahale Ka Naata Kabhi)
I am not sure whether she has sung many Marathi songs
since she changed her identity to Purnima and have
sung many catchy Hindi tunes. (Tu tu tu tutu Tara
and many more)
Has Sadhana Sargam (nee Ghanekar) , Alka Yagnik,
Kumar Sanu have Marathi songs to their credit.

Quite sure, but not positive. I've always had the impression that the
singer was Shyama Chittar, for various reasons, none of which would stand
up in court!
(1) I have a cassette of this song, and the voice sounds somewhat
different from Suman's. Since the cassette is one I compiled and isn't
store-bought, I can't check the inlay, I'm afraid.
(2) When I was at the University of Bombay, some of us got together to
sing for a function. "Navika Re" was among the songs, and the girl who was
singing it (Kalpana) told me it was by Shyama Chittar.
(3) Mr. Chittar was a colleague of my mother's at RBI Bombay, and I
mentioned this song to him once; he didn't correct me, but then he might
have assumed that I was mentioning it as his sister-in-law's song rather
than his wife's.
As I said, these aren't very good reasons for my impression! If you know
that there is a Suman K. recording of this song, I'm probably wrong and
you're right....On the other hand, a song has been sung by different
singers. Didn't Usha and Asha both have versions of Maghe ubha Mangesh?
Anybody know for certain who the singer of Navika Re is?

It's by Suman Kalyanpur - positive. I have about 15 of her bhaavgeets. Some of
'Navikaa ..' are as good as 'Navikaa ..'

There is a compilation of songs of Suman Kalyanpur in a double cassette
set, 'ZuLalya Surela Tara' which has this song, 'Naavika re'. So, I guess,
it must be sung by her.
Vaishali
Years ago, when I remarked about the beauty of Dr. Prabha Atre's rendition
of 'jago me sarE' in Maroo Behag, my friend Anil Kunte sang a remarkably
wonderful Marathi song in Maroo Behag, rendered by either Sudhir Phadke or
Arun Date. Stupid of me, not to get a recording of it immediately. I keep
yearning for it now... Any body know the song I am refering to?
I have heard Lata/Hridaynath Mangeshkar's Tukayache Abhang (sunadara the
dhyAna is my favourite), Ganesh Vandana, Bhagawad Gita and Meera bhajans.
But there must be more - more Marathi songs. Please, some one tell me more
about what and where it is available... Oh, there was a time when I wandered
the streets of Pune looking for more of this marvellous music...
Regards.
