It's not often that a comedy stays a comedy from the first frame to
the last in a Hindi film. ANDAZ APNA APNA which played at the Rialto Theatre
last weekend is an exception to that rule. Hindi films can be fun and this
film proves it. The reason this film works is not because it is inventingly
witty or that it is marvelously original. It is neither. What makes this film
work is the clarity of the director's vision.

Rajkumar Santoshi set out to make an all-out comic entertainer in
the 60's style comedy with Tushar Bhatia's Nayyaresque musical score
complementing the 60's mood in a contemporary setting. Santoshi has proven to
be one of the better directors today. He has excelled with the action film
GHAYAL, the social drama DAMINI, and now has made one of the better comedies
in recent years. Santoshi's screenplay makes a joke out of a joke, thus
inventing it with a new angle.

The film is a laugh riot from beginning to end with strong
performances from its cast. Aamir Khan gives a fine performance in his first
comic role. His timing and dialogue delivery was excellent. Salman Khan has
been written off as a wooden actor but in this film he makes a virtue of this
woodeness and comes up with a hilarious spoof of a performance. He plays off
the other characters very well and his expression and gestures when not
speaking are hilarious. Paresh Rawal is fine in a double role, especially in
the role of the industrialist Bajaj. The Ajit impersonator and his sidekick
Robert are hilarious and almost steal the show from the stars. Raveena Tandon
was o.k. while Karishma Kapoor didn't have much to do.

Much has been written about the controversy about Santoshi favouring
Aamir over Salman and his cutting of Salman's role but it is not evident in
the film because both are practically together in most of their scenes. The
director has balanced both roles well. This is an all-out entertainer and
definitely one of the better films this year.

I agree with Ashok's review. It is a terrific entertainer. The music
is good, and Aamir did a fine job.
