This Thalatu song (Unnai naan ariven, yennai anri yaar arivaar) is from
the Tamilzh movie, GUNA starring Kamal Haasan. His character as those of
you who have seen the movie is a very eccentric one. This song
wonderfully depicts the entire movie, his character, the angst of a girl
who loves him but who he doesnt. The lyrics are very good and apt. The
song has different parts.

It starts off with her trying to put Kamal to sleep, and that
dialogue(listen carefully as she keeps saying Varum Varum and in the end
he says that for in a eccentric way) beautifully sets his character for
us, the listeners. We get to know what type of a person he is. (btw the
background on his character is that he is after his dream, his concept
of mukti in the form of a fictional girl 'Abhirami', it is his beleif
that she will liberate him from the mess that he is living in (he lives
in a prostitute area).

Then slowly she starts singing, haunting tune, lyrics entirely fitting
to the Girl's mood, characterisation. S Janaki takes it up, booming sad
voice emotes tremendously (sometimes she screeches in her renditions but
here she is brilliant)and spins her sadness, the eccentricness of him,
her state where she believes he has atleast her to understand and take
care while she does not have anyone to understand her (unnai naan
ariven, ennai yaar arivar?).

She is a Prostitute and the lyrics convey her agony 'you are a star who
has come down from the sky while I am just a mahal where people come and
stay and then leave' The haunting melody along with the lyrics elevates
this song into a different level altogether.

I do not know much about the ragas etc , I am sure Narayanan or somebody
who has heard this song can explain that. The Sadness is so palpable,
when you hear her scream in agony at the end 'En daan Pirandayo, Inge
Vazlandayo' (why did u take birth , then why did you have to groq up
here?) the pain hits you, and then beautifully Ilayaraja shifts to a
male voice and ends in a hindustani alaap. Memorable. (IIRC Ustad
Sultan Khan )

Then there is this silent pause that IR uses in some of his memorable
songs. Then a the mood changes with a happy Telugu folkish chorus!
'oyila lo, oyila lo' takes over before we return back to the female
vocals ,oldish sounding, this time Varalaxmi (as Kamal' mother singing
IIRC) the pallavi, with lyrics suggesting the sorrow of a mother.

All in all a great song,(although strangely not a well known song)
Sometimes when you hear it in the night, alone, the song sets the
ambience, I invariably go the window and look out at the sky, the trees,
everything is quiet and feels quiet in the mind as well.

Agreed. The song is great one till it descends down to labo labo
shouts.

It starts with carnatic style keeravani and then hindustani style of the
raga of the same name(this raga is a recent import into hindustani
from carnatic). Now please don't insule folk art by calling that
labo labo lajjnakka by calling it "telugu folkish" :-). But for that
it is a great song. Ilayaraja has composed many songs in keeravani
like:-
Kaatril endhan geetham (Johnny)
Thanga changili minnum Paingili (Thooral ninnu pochu)
Kanne Kalai Mane (moonram pirai).
There are actually many more.

AGreed and my apologies for using the term folkish, couldnt think of a
word, Infact When I listen to it, I just stop it at the end of the
Hindustani alaap( thats why I automatically wrote, illayaraja ends with
alaap. Though Varalaxmi aged voice at the very end is good as well and
that haunting mood comes back. all in alla great song, esp when it fits
the movie so well, it conveys a lot about the characters.

in Illayaraja's composed Tamilzh Movie 'TIME:. A great song in a not so
well known movie. WOnderuful, he seems to have used all kinds of
classical instruments, sounds like a symphonyish. A wonderful song.

There are few other songs were he has used keeravani during
intreludes like
Poove Sempoove from Solla Thudikkuthu Manasu
Kanmaniye kaadhal enbadhu from aarilirunthu arupathu varai.
second interlude .
Thalattuthe Vaanam from Kadal Meengal portion of second
interlude. What a song btw. Soft song. Talk of soft songs,
there is one in Nenjathai killathe. Paruvame Puthiya paadal.
All the instruments slowly build up volume and slowly fade away.
Great song.
