Hi,

I was wondering if there are any copyright restrictions on film songs.
I have heard numerous songs that are blatant plagiaries of some of the
older ones. I will cite two examples ..

1. O priya priya (Movie ??) is a copy of the original telugu song
"O priya priya" (Film: Gitanjali)
2. Dhak Dhak karne laga (Film: Beta) is a copy of original telugu song
from the film "Bobbili Raja"

Both the originals cited above had music scored by Ilayaraaja and I know
that he was not the MD for the hindi films. There is another song I can
think of which was scored in Tamil by Ilayaraaja and later remade in
Hindi "Neele Neele ambar par" (Kalaakaar). But in this case the MD for the
hindi film is also Ilayaraaja.

I am sure there are hundreds of such songs that have been copied from
regional film tunes into hindi and Vice-Versa. I know a lot of Telugu
songs that have been copied from Hindi.

It is possible that the copyright is held by the recording company and
not the music directors .. in which case copyrights can be transferred
(for money of course !!). I wonder if any of you guys know facts about
this.

The music director for the original film in Tamil ("Pazhanangal Mudivathillai"
I think) was Ilaiyaraja but the Hindi film "Kalaakar" had music by Kalyanji
Anandji. The two versions of the song were sung by Kishore Kumar and Sadhna
Sargam. Also, although the chorus has the same tune, I don't think the rest of
the song copies the tune of the original.
The case that immediately comes to mind where the music was identical in both
the Tamil and Hindi versions of the film and the MD was the same is of course
"Moondram Pirai" and "Sadma".

the movie is DIl *ing Amir Khan, Madhuri Dixit

There's a Punjabi song "Kali teri gut te paranda tera lal ni..."
that becomes "Kali teri choti hai paranda tera lal ni..." which
is neither Punjabi nor Hindi- but a curious mixture of the two. I
liked this modified version though, and it was from a film starring
Chunkey Pandey/Neelam (name of the film ????).

How about "Brother Lui-Lui" (Modern Talking) that becomes "Zooby-
Zooby" in Dance-Dance! Bappi Lehri's "creative" talent at the
very best !! ;-) ;-) ;-)

Also, two hit songs from "Maine Pyar Kiya":
--> Mere rang me rangane valee ...(Final Countdown....)
--> Ata Jate Hanste Gaate....(I just called to say I love you..)

And do you remember of a song "Hawa Hawa Aye Hava Khushboo Luta De.."
by Hasan Jahangir that lead to at least 3-4 different songs in films?
One was "Jawan Jawan...". I think there were at least one or two more.
Does anyone recollect those ?

Copyrights can be tranferred by the recording company, I think. But I am
sure that Bappi Lehri does not come to the US for them... The songs copied
from English songs are probably (surely?) copied without permission.
Even within India, not everyone bothers about copyrights. I think
there was a law-suit bertween two versions of "Hawa Hawa..."

It was Bahaar Aane Tak and the stars were Rupa Ganguly (Draupadi)
and ???
This song became a hit so there was a spate of punjabi song copies. At
least a couple of these were in Nagmani (1. Peecche peecche aata meri
chaal.. 2. ??).

One that was more publicised was the fight b/w 'Jumma Chumma'(Hum)
and 'Tamma Tamma'(Thanedar) regarding which was the *original*
while both were copies of an Egyptian song !
Also, the song 'Tum jo bane mere humsafar' used the tune of Lara's
Theme (Dr Zhivago).
A seemingly respectable practice seems to be to copy the metre
of an older song. e.g.
1. Thandi Hawaen...(MD: SD)
2. Rahen na rahen hum...(MD: ??)
3. Sagar kinare ...(MD: RD)
I once read an interview in which RD admitted to having copied
the metre. He implied that it was ok since the original was done
by SD and it had already been copied by someone else.
Any other examples of 'musical licence' ?
