I may very well have made some mistakes up there but this is
roughly how it sounded to me when (and the only time) I heard it.
Does anyone know this song and can mail the lyrics and if possible
its meaning to me? It has a kind of haunting & beautiful tune (or
may be the group that I heard singing was too good...) and had the
chants(?) of "bole so nihaal, sat sri akaal", if that helps in
identifying the song...
Thanks,
Nandita

It is from the PUNJABI movie 'NANAK NAAM JAHAAJ HAI'
*ing VIMMI, SHAMMI KAPOOR
ACHALA SACHDEV and some others I don't remember now. All the songs are
worth hearing. I don't know if a tape or CD is available.

If anyone has ANY information on the availability of the audio or video of
this film, PLEASE let me know. I have been looking for this for YEARS! I
absolutely love the songs - especially an Asha song:-), which I don't
remember any more:-(
While I am at it, let me also ask about a movie that I am looking for right
now (for someone) but have had no success at all. This is 'badbaan', starring
Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari (I think). I would appreciate if anyone
has any information.

It *is* available on cassette SPHO11012 [HMV], as well as,
surprise-surprise, a T-Series CD (yes, I believe it is the original
soundtrack) and the above shabad is the first track.
So, let's talk about the soundtrack a litlle bit. The MD is the inimitable
S. Mohinder. The singers-'songs' list is quite impressive:
1. deh shivaa bar mohe ehai [MKaps & Chorus]
2. bisar gayee sab taat paraayee [Manna D]
3. prabh jee taukay laaj hamaaree [Asha B]
4. mitar peyaaray noo.n [Rafi]
5. mere saahib, mere saahib [Asha B]
6. guraa.n ik deh bujhaayee [Manna D]
7. re man aiso kar sanyaasaa [Asha B]
8. kal taaran gur naanak aayaa [Bahi Sumund Singh Ragi]
9. har chauthaRee laa.nv [S. Mohinder & Bhushan Mehta]
10. miTee dhundh jag chaaNnan hoaa [ Bhai Sumund Singh Ragi]
Now, coming to the 'this song'... the track features 4 different stanzas
from 3 different 'lyricists' :)

na Daro.n ari so.n jab jaaye laro.n nischai kar apanee jeet karo.n

AND NOW THIS REFRAIN:
bolay so nihaal, sat sree akaal
nihaal=muraadmand, kaamyaab, fulfilled
sat=satya, true
akaal=kaal se haT kar, beyond incarnation
The above phrase is, to my knowledge, not taken from any of the Gurus'
writings. It's possible to equate this phrase with a slogan that the Sikhs
shout out at the end of prayers (ardaas) to mean: 'one who remembers (does
the simran of) the name of the Lord who is beyond incarnation (also called
waaheguru or akaal-purakh) will be fulfilled (in life)'.
Fair enough!

I did see the video a few years ago in the local stores. So I would imagine it
should be easily avalilable in the NY area stores as well. The Asha song you
referred to was one of the gems, but the video print was a bit mutilated, esp.
in the songs... :((

Me too.

Guri,
Thanks so much for this post. Do you know where the CD (or cassette) might
be available? I have looked at most stores in the NY area, but have not been
successful yet. Just last weekend I saw a whole bunch of T-Series CDs with
Gurmukhi script on the cover and I kind of glanced over them. Is 'nanak naam
jahaz hai' printed in Gurmukhi on the CD cover?

Great list of songs. I love Asha's 'mere saahib, mere saahib'. The only thing
this great soundtrack does not have is the Voice Of God:-) I had no idea
S.Mohinder did the music for this film. I am really getting more and more
impressed with S.Mohinder's music. His 'naata', will remain one of the top
ten soundtracks of all time for me.
Wow!! That was great. Like Pradeep (Dubey) would say
"Jai Guri" - I mean Jai Guru". :))))
Happy listenings.
Satish Kalra
Thanks a lot for the lyrics and their translations and... thanks you for
the wonderful post.
Nandita
I saw the trailer of this film long ago. Vimi is the heroine, alright, but
I don't think Shammi Kapoor is in the cast. Prithviraj is there. I think
the hero was one Som Dutt. Inder Singh Johar has a role.
In addition to the sources mentioned by guri, a spurious cassette put out
by ASC is available. Superb music by "S. Mahindra". You will miss Lata
as much as one misses the fifth wheel for a car! For an anecdote on
an Asha song, composed in raaga Kalaavati, check out the report by Satish K.
on S. Mohinder at the Washington RMIM meet.
