Remember the Maachis (1996) number 'Chod aaye hum'? Remember the whistling
in that song which also is was the beginning of that song? Well, who could
forget that! But the point is its a direct lift from the song 'il campo di
pallone' which was part of the soundtrack for the 1994 Italian movie 'Caro
Diario' (Dear Diary). The composer of Caro diario was Nicola Piovani who was
also the composer of the Oscar winning 'La vita e bella', better known as
'Life is beautiful'. Wonder if Vishal and Gulzar saab saw the movie in some
international film festival in Mumbai and decided that this piece was too
good to resist!!? Thanks to Arun (who goes by the name Cricfan in RMIM) for
pointing me to Caro diario!

Listen to both the songs at http://www.iespana.es/i2fs/

Hi Karthik,
Since the whistling part was more apart of arrangement of the song
rather than the tune itself and also because if i remeber correctly,
'Maachis' score carried some vague credit to a sound engineer or
something like that ( the only soundtrack to carry such credit) and
also because of a personal bias for vishaal, we can shift the blame on
the arranger and absolve Vishaal of the crime.

Vibhendu,

I carry a personal bias towards Vishal too, I personally feel he's one of
the few sensible composers in Hindi apart from Ismail Darbar in the present
day....and I was taken aback listening to this lift. The whistling is indeed
part of the tune....the tune is also used with lyrics written so beautifully
by Gulzar...'jahaan teri pairon ne....' is that part which has the same tune
as the whistling. So I wouldnt shift the blame on the arranger!

Hi Karthik,

I tried sending you mail on the above email id, but it bounced back.
Anyway,
I'm a member of a quiz mailing list. I want to use some data from your
website
for a quiz. Would that be okay with you? Obviously, I'll credit you &
your website when I give out the answers.

Thanks.

Cheers
Arun

Dear Arun,

Sorry for the bounced mail. I had an account in onebox.com which I was using
for Google Groups. But onebox recently went pay and my mail is gone phut!
I've changed the ID to Yahoo just now!

And please go right ahead and use anything you require from my site. My site
is more of a collection of discoveries from so many other people so I really
do not have any right to claim ownership of these stuff. Even if you dont
give my site credit I really dont have an issue with that. But on the other
side, if you do, more people will visit my site and I might have a chance to
unearth more lifts by interacting with them!

Which quiz mailing list is this? I'm a part of a few of them in Yahoo
Groups. Quiznet is one of them. Quiznet's moderator had posted a music quiz
where he had a few questions based on lifts and I suggested him to take a
look at my site. Needless to say he was totally amazed by such a huge list
in one place!

It is quiznet, actually :-)Ah, you must've mailed Anand

It started off as a private list of 5 former students of KREC until I
was added to the list :-) For better or worse, I got all the KQA folks
on the list, then the IIT list merged into it and ad infinitum. Now I
think there are more than 2000 members from around the world. Now if
the KREC guys have a private list, they aren't telling me :-) <g>

Cheers
Arun
