"Poove sempoove un vaasam varum" (K.J.Yesudas) is from "Solla
Thudikudhu Manasu" (Karthik). Only redeeming factor in the movie was
this song, which appeared, thankfully, at several places. Chitra also
had her own version of this song I think. Illayaraja reused the song
in the Telugu film "Prema"?

Chitra was introduced in the Tamil film "Poove Poochudavaa" (85;
music: Illayaraja), when the original Malayalam movie "Nokketha
Dhoorathu Kannum Nattu" (1984; music: Jerry) was being remade in
Tamil. After this movie director Faazil, actress Nadiya and singer
Chitra did well for themselves in Tamil films. Chitra was already
singing in Malayalam movies before that. The songs of the Tamil
version were a rage - "chinna kuil paadum paatu kekkudha, ku ku ku ku
koo.."

In Hindi, she probably started singing in "Love" (Salman, Revathi)
(the only difference between the flop "Love" and original hit "Prema"
was in the climax). Chitra sang in another Salman starrer "Jaagruti",
which had the nice song "hawaa mein kya hain, khushboo hain" (for
Karishma Kapoor). Both had music by Anand-Milind.

Later she sang again for Karishma in the movie "Suhaag" (Ajay Devgan).
The song was "tere liye jaanam tere liye", which was based on "kaadhal
rojaave" (from "Roja"; A.R.Rahman); again by Anand-Milind. On a related
note, another interesting lift of Anand-Milind from Rahman was in a
Jackie Shroff movie. The lifted song was "raasathi en usuru" (from
"Thiruda Thiruda") - something that ARR himself did not attempt in
"Chor Chor"! Anand-Milind made Yesudas sing the Hindi version with
normal orchestration.

Chitra sang another lifted song (from Illayaraja) for Anu Malik in the
recent "Viraasat" - "paayalein chun mun chun mun" with Kumar Sanu.

She regularly sings in Rahman's Hindi films - Roja, Bombay, Rangeela,
Tu Hi Mera Dil, Love Birds, Sapnay, Kabhi Na Kabhi etc.

Wasn't this movie dubbed in Tamil as "Keeravaani"? What a wonderful
set of songs! The song "yekaantha velai" (eekantha vela) had a great
picturization to go with the song. The song "chilakaga palukavo" you
mention, I guess, is the heavenly "keeravaani, iraviley, kanaviley
paada vaa nee."

It is a Vamsee movie. The "ku ku ku" song's picturization on Banupriya
again, like the "yekaantha velai" song, shows you the Illayaraja-
Vamsee magic. Illayaraja made the tune of "vennello godaari andam"
(S.Janaki) initially for a Bharathiraja movie, but it was never used
in it. The original was also sung by S Janaki "doorathil naan kanda un
mugam, nadi theerathil.."

The song "chalti ka naam gaadi" is a remixed version of the wonderful
SPB solo "chinna mani kuyile" from "Amman Koyil Kizhakaale." The
interludes, music and lyrics are much better in the original.

"Gharana Mogudu" was by Keeravani. Anand-Milind borrowed from the
Telugu version in "Laadla" (songs like "ladki hai kya, re baaba").
The Tamil movie "Mannan" (Rajnikanth) was the remake of "Gharana
Mogudu" - not the songs though. Illayaraja created that divine solo
"amma endr azhaikaadha uyir illaiye, ammavai vanangaadhu uyarv_illaiye"
in Yesudas's voice.

Which Jackie Shroff movie is it and do you remember the song?

Yes it was. And the veena piece before SP starts with 'keeravaani...' is
heavenly! I find 'palike chiluka' to be one of the most innovative of
Raja's compositions. The way the bird sounds, the swaras and the words are
combined .. its beautiful. There's another song (which shows up in the
climax when she is running away from the faceless-villian) whose words I
cannot remember. Raja repeated its tune in 'Abhinandana' but the lyrics
are different.

: > 5. Ladies Tailor

: >

And 'porapaatu idi' which is an interesting song. The movie is again
strange :) --- something about a tailor looking for some gal with a
distinctive birthmark, right? Where does Vamsee get these storylines.. ?

More movies come to mind ---

Marana Mridangam --- something tells me this is a Chiranjeevi movie. Has
the very sweet 'karigipoyaanu karpoora veena ga'. Has some other very
mediocre songs though.

Indrudu Chadrudu --- (dubbed into Tamil as Indiran Chandiran right?).
Starred Kamal and then current rage Vijayashanti (of Eeshwar fame). I
rememember 'sandhya raagaku sarigamalu' and the lullaby that the older
Kamal sings just before he is killed..

Didn't Raja do a bunch of Chiranjeevi movies in the mid 80s? There was one
with Radha and Vijayashanti, but I can't remember the name .. umm.. ahh!
Kondaveeti Donga! :) Wasn't that a Raja movie? And 'Kaidi # 786' with
'guvva guvvalamma'? :)

One more question. The song that shows up in Vansh --- aake teri baahon
mein, sounds extremely Raja'ish but is not from the original Agni
Nakshatram. Its in place of 'vaa vaa anbe anbe' ('neeve amaraswarame' in
Telugu), but its not the same tune. Then what is the original to 'aake
teri...' ?

Renu.

Chitra's first song was 'poojaikketha poovidhu nethu thane poothadhu'
from the movie Neethaana andha kuyil. Music by Maestro Ilaiyaraja.

I think Satish has the chronology right. From what I remember Gharana
Mogudu came first, it was remade in tamiz and after it's succesful run,
Mannan was dubbed in Telugu and had a decent run.

Aboorva Sagotharagal and Michael Madana Kama Rajan were both by Ilayaraja.
Remember SPB winning an award for 'unnai ninaichen paattu padichen' from
Aboorva sagotharagal.

Songs from Michael Madana Kama Rajan:
kathai kezhu kathai kezhu - Ilayaraja
rambambam arambam - SPB,?
vachalum vakkama ponalum - Malaysia,Janaki
sundari neeyum sundaran - Kamal, Janaki (Kamal and Urvasi on the screen)
sivarathiri thookkkam Ethu - SPB, Janaki

This one is 'inji idupazhaga' - a small Janaki solo and then a Kamal-Janaki
duet. Another folky song from the movie,Thevar Magan, 'potri paadai ponne' was
recycled in Virasat.

In Tamil the movie was Vetri Vizha *ing Kamal, Amala, Prabhu, Kushbu,
Sasikala. MD by IR. The song is 'poongaatru un per solla kettene indru'

This song was the only redeeming feature of otherwise a rotten film( pathetic
copy of Robert Ludlum's Bourne Identity). Not only was the song great it was
beautifully filmed.

I think you've got the chronology backwards, Satish, w.r.t Gharana Mogudu

and Mannan. I'm quite certain that the thamizh movie was made before
the Telugu one, because I watched this film on the second day of its
release, with a Tamilian friend who said that he'd already seen the
Rajani movie by then. I subsequently saw the Rajani movie, too, of
course.

The Telugu version of the film does not have any equivalent of the
"amma endr-azhaikkadha uyir illaiye" -- what a wonderful song! Dripping
with the rasa of pure Kalyani ragam, Yesudas' voice suits the ambience
of the loving son portrayed quite well (I think) by Rajanikanth.

While on the topic of Tamil-Telugu songs, who gave the music for
Apoorvasagodhargal? How about Michael Madhana Kama Rajan (Michael

Madhana Kama Raju, in Telugu)? The latter was certainly IR. I
distinctly remember the "kadha chebuta kadha chebuta" song at the

beginning of the movie sung by the MD for the "sootradhaar" of the
story. Other songs of the film were also quite melodious: my memory
always fails me with Tamil-Telugu lyrics :( There was this duet
that Kamal and Khushboo sing, there is that marriage song of Kamal
and the plump heroine (whatshername?), and the sensuous '... raathiri

...' song that Kamal does NOT sing :)) Or does he? Can someone
list the songs of this movie.

Idhran-Chandhran (was that the Tamil equivalent of Indrudu Chandrudu)

also had IR as the MD. It had an IR solo also -- 'nacchina bed-du

chakkani food-du sidhham raa freind-u, takkina-vanni pakkana peTTi
paTTara O paTTu -- paTTa raa sa_i aNTuu, naDum-chuTTu uDum-paTTu'
sung by the Mayor's character. A very humorous song -- I don't know
the Tamil lyrics, but the Telugu words above mean something like
"A bed that you'll like, some food that you'll love are ready, my friend.
Keep everything else aside, and here, get a grip on this thing --
Get a firm grip, a grip like an 'uDumu' (monitor lizard :), around
this waist!" :))

What about that Revathi-Kamal starrer -- it had a song that went
"something-something-pazhaga ... maraka manam something illaiye :)"
[sorry, I'm really bad at this :)] sung in a very folky and grating
style by Kamal himself (it also had a Janaki version). Nice song.

More songs as I remember them, and get some time to post :)

Regards,
Ravindra.

Another great song 'masaru ponne varuga', based on some ancient tamil
religional song ( only lyrics).

Related to this topic, I think IR is the only MD who was immensly popular
not only in tamil but also in telugh, kannada and malayalam. There are
lot of others mds like MSV, KVM, kanadasala, keeravani and others did,
but IR was the only one,( in 80's) truly the top MD for all the languages
at the same time.

which was great - maarugo maarugo maarugayi - Kamal and Sasikala dancing
