Just read about the death of hindi films' yester-year hero and
villain Ajit. RIP.
Just yesterday, I was watching one of my song collections (on video)
and one of the songs was the "Shikari" duet "Agar main poochhoN jawab
doge".
While Ajit is associated by the modern generation with "Ajitisms", one
also remembers him as a manly, handsome figure in his early films. To
be sure, he was no great shakes as an actor. But he used to look really
imposing when compared with, say, the sissy-ish Shekhar and Suresh etc.
He and Suraiyya made a good couple in "Moti Mahal".
I also remember some good songs from films in which Ajit acted. "Guest
House" was one such film in which the late Chitragupt gave some scin-
tillating music. Two songs picturised on Ajit during this period were
"Jis ka joota usi ka sar" from "Guest House" and "Muft huwe badnaam"
from, I think "Baraat". "Shikari" had excellent music with some fine
lyrics by the late Farooq Qaisar.
Ajit also starred opposite Madhubala, probably in "Bequsoor". There
was one film with Meena Shorey which I don't remember much, except
a sort of a chorus song being sung by college students.
Can any of our stalwarts post a list of some Ajit songs (both pic-
turised on him and others from his films) in his memory ?

MD of course is G.S. Kohli - the above song is an interesting number!

Was this the film with music by S. Mohinder? There's a very pretty solo in it
by Rafi, "Phir Teri Yaad Naye Geet Sunaane Aai".

How about songs of "Halaaku", music by S-J, starting with "Aaja Ke Intezaar
Men"?

Beqasuur has two MDs, Anil Biswas & Hansraj Behl. Most of the songs are by
AB. I do not have the above song in my CD, so I am not sure who the MD for
that is.

Halaaku starred Pran in the title role. Was Ajit also part of it?
Ajit also featured in Naya Daur as Dilip's friend-turned-rival-turned-friend.
He figures in the song "yeh desh hai viir javaano.n kaa". Ajit also has the
honour of being the face for one of Talat's more famous songs. "tasaviir
banaataa huu.N" from Baradari (MD : Nashad)
regards
Vijay
I remember a duet that goes like
Din ho ya raat hum rahe tere saath yeh hamari marzi ..
Rafi and Lata, I guess on screen it is Ajit and Mala Sinha,
I maybe wrong.
And the Naya Daur number
Yeh desh hai veer jawano ka...
I think Rafi sings for both Ajit and DK accompanied by someone
whose name I don't remember. The same person sings with Rafi
for MM, the song being "Haan yeh mana meri jaan mohabat .."

That movie was 'Jigar', directed by Farooq Siddiqui.

No. Actually that honour(!!) goes to Chandrashekhar, who came
in sidey roles later on.

Neha Desai
Ragini (Padmini's sister) starred opposite him. She died very
young (of Cancer, I think) in the early eighties.

Yes, "Halaku" had a very fine music score. Notwithstanding
the aversion generally expressed towards Shankar-Jaikishan
in RMIM, I think they created a lot of good music, parti-
cularly in the fifties. This film, for instance, had such
beautiful songs as :
"Dil ka na karna aitbaar koi, Bhoole se bhi na karna pyaar koi"
"Aa ja ke ke intezaar men jaane ko hai bahaar bhi"
"TumheN aankhoN ne dil men bulaaya, ab to samajh jao, E ji chale aao"
"Ho sunta ja, dil ka naghma pyaar ki dhun par O sitamgar"
"Use mil gayi nayi zindagi, jise dard-e-dil ne mita diya"
But Ajit figures in only one of the film's songs. In others,
he is either not in the scene or merely a spectator/listener.

Yes, Ajit was the hero against Meena Kumari, although Pran did
a great job in the title role. The film is memorable only
because of its music, Pran's role and some fine dances,
including an absolutely bewitching number "TumheN ankhoN ne dil
men bulaaya" by Helen and Minoo Mumtaz. Another beautiful song
I particularly remember is "Dil ka na karna aitbaar koi, bhoole
se bhi na karna pyaar koi".
IIRC, Pran polled the highest number of votes by far in the
Filmfare poll for nomination as the Best Supporting Actor. In
those days the Magazine had a policy that nobody in a title role
could be nominated for the Supporting Actor category. Others
not considered on this ground included Sohrab Modi (in "Yahudi")
and Prithviraj Kapoor (in "MeA").

No. I think this song was picturised on Chandrashekhar.
Ajit did figure in the other song from the film, a duet
with Geeta Bali "Dagha nahiN dena ji dagha nahiN dena".

Ajit did a very commendable role in "Mughal-e-Azam" as Durjan
Singh.
Although people generally remember Ajit as the villain in films
like "Zanjeer" and "YaadoN ki Baraat", his second innings in the
industry (as a villain) really started in 1965 with "Suraj",
where he put over a very competent performance.

This song is from 'Milan'. I don't know if this song featured Mala Sinha,
the movie I believe has Nalini Jaywant in the title role. The music was
I think by Hansraj Bahl.

The song is a duet. Rafi's cosinger in this song is Balbir (who sings for Ajit).
- Balaji
"Main khushnaseeb hoon mujhko kiseekaa pyaar milaa"
from Tower House (IIRC).
Ambrish
"Din ho ya raat" is from "Miss Bombay" not "Milan". Both had music by
Hansraj Behl which may be the cause for the confusion. Also Rafi's cosinger
is not Lata in the above mentioned song, it is Suman.

the name of the ajay devgun flick is jigar.
Wonder if any of his (earlier) movies betrayed his real name (Hamid
Ali Khan ???).

Yes, perhaps their only film together. In real life, the two were
very good friends. Ajit was Madhubala's "raakhi clad" brother.
(Interesting how customs/practices cross over regligious faultlines.)
According to MOhan Deep, author of a book on Madhubala, Ajit was one
of the few men in her life who were genuinely nice to her.
>Was this the film with music by S. Mohinder? There's a very pretty solo in it
>by Rafi, "Phir Teri Yaad Naye Geet Sunaane Aai".
That song is from 'Bekhabar,' a mid-60s film that is perhpas further
down in the food chain than an Ajit film: it's a Dara Singh film.
The romantic pair was Sailesh Kumar and the dimpled beauty, Saeeda Khan.
Yes, a nice Rafi solo, composed by S. Mohinder, written by Raja Mehdi
Ali Khan. I have always confused it with another great Rafi song of early
1960s: "phir vo bhooli si yaad aai hai, aye gham-e-dil teri duhaai hai"
from 'Begana' (Shailendra; S-J). (No, not they; the music is by
Sapan-Jagmohan).
Incidentally, the Bekhabar song is a tandem, though the Suman solo
version is not commonly heard. The song is far superior to the much
better known tandem by the two singers from Jahaan Pyar Mile.

Ajit had the good fortune to star in many films with good music, more than
enough to make up an RMIM quiz! A few films and songs are:
*I just saw a CD release by RPG of three Chitragupta masterpieces:
Guest HOuse. Opera House, and Ek Raaz. The first two are Ajit starrers,
with Shakila and B. Sarojadevi, respectively. Good songs are too numerous
to list.
*Halaku has already been mentioned by Sanjeev. I believe Ajit is the romantic
lead opposite Meenakumari, with Pran in the title role.
*Ajit starred in two excellent Hasraj Bahl films, Miss Bombay and Milan,
I think both with Nalini Jaywant. Two Rafi solos from the former are
particular favourites of mine:
zindgi bhar gham judaai kaa mujhe taDapaaega
har nayaa mausam puraani yaad le kar aayegaa
and another that I don't remember the words properly:
le chalaa jidhar ye dil nilal paDe
ham chale jidhar zamaana chal paDe (?)
jo bhi vaq ke sang chalaa (?) vo mard hai
jo reh gayaa vo raaste kaa sard (?) hai
*Ambrish has already mentioned Tower House, with great music by Ravi and
lovely songs by Mukesh, Lata, and Asha.
*One of the musical gems by an obscure music director is Main Suhagan Hun
with Mala Sinha and Ajit. The MD was Lachhiram Tamar. It had two great
Rafi solos:
sab javaa.n sab hasee.n, koi tum saa nahi.n
and
tu shokh-e-kali mai.n mast pavan tu sham-e-vafaa mai.n parvaanaa
o o gulshan gushan mehfil mehfil teraa meraa afsaana
The latter is a tandem, the better-known version being a Rafi-Asha duet.
Then there was the wonderful semi-classical sung by Rafi and Asha:
gori tore nain, nainavaa, kajar bin kaare kaare kaare
It has very nice Talat song that I forget. The real masterpiece
composition of the film is a Lata solo:
aye dil machal machal ke yoo.N rotaa hai zaar zaar kyaa
apanaa chaman ujaD gayaa aaegi ab bahaar kyaa
* Couple of excellent soundtracks of Nashad have Ajit in the cast.
Baradari has been mentioned. Anoteher is Bada Bhai, costarring
Kamini Kaushal. I remember just one song by Rafi and chorus, an
inspirational song that is truly inspiring and inspired on the part
of the lyricist and composer. It's a multi-part song; perhaps comes
many times in the film:
qadam baDhaae jaa na Dar, qadam baDhaae jaa
paa.nv tale tere zamee.n, sar uThaae jaa (?)
* In most cases above, I don't know if Ajit had anything to do with
the picturization of the song. One I do know that features Dilip
and Ajit is from Naya Daur. It's a wonderfully sung song (alas!
too short.). I think Rafi's voice is used for both the actors.
It seems to be a male-bonding song after they fight off attackers;
Are they praising friendship and decrying love?
. dil le ke daGaa dete hai.n ...
yaaro.n ke paseene par ham khoon bahaa denge
Can someone give the full fragment? By way of a detour: I find
Rafi excellent in such songs, typically with little or no orchestration.
"tang aa chuke hai.n" from Pyasa is well-known. Another marvellous
fragment one would miss if one didn't see the film itself occurs in
SN Tripathi's Sangeet Samrat Tansen, a bit before the majestic
Manna Dey-Rafi duet, "sud bisar gai aaj". The fragment is
. ab aae na barakhaa bahaar sajani piyaravaa jaae base parades
It is worth watching the tape just for catching the fragment.
* Let me finish with the greatest soundtrack featuring Ajit,
although I don't know which songs, if any, he features in: Nastik.
Ashok
Not quite : Saiyan (1951) (M.Sadiq's remake of "Duel In The Sun"; Ajit is the
Indian Joseph Cotten).
Teerandaz (1955) (this also starred Jairaj ; not sure who played
the lead opposite Madhubala. Ajit did have top
billing I think, though)
Ajit also figured in movies like Naqab (1955), and of course, Mughal-e-Azam
with her, but not as a hero. His role as Durjan in MeA probably best
mirrored his real-life relationship with her.

* It must be a 20th-century Indian poem in any language (though Urdu
and Hindi are slightly preferred, since I can read these, though any
other language will work, too).
* It must be - and that's the unusual part - on the subject of
classical Western (i.e. Greek or Roman) mythology. An entire poem
has to be on a specific myth, not just a passing reference to Greek
or Roman mythology. Modern reworkings and reenactments of myths,
allegories, or poetic situations and narratives modelled on such
myths, are fine too.
* It had better be a handsome poem (poems).
Now, I'm not sure such poems exist, but if anything comes to mind, I
would be extremely grateful to anyone who could give me a suggestion
or a reference.

Philip Nikolayev

Is Lata-chorus "....Ankhon Me Chhaye Laali ... To Samajho Aai Jawaani" ? Sorry
for distorted piece. I am trying to recall Lata-chorus from this film where
sound of claps are used well.
>Ajit also figured in movies like Naqab (1955), and of course, Mughal-e-Azam
Naqab (1955) had music of Pandit Govindram. One Talat solo 'Tera Khayaal Dil
Ko Sataaye To Kyaa Karen' and a great one at that, is already out on some
Talat album by HMV. What's is not available is this very good Rafi-Lata duet:
Kab Taq Uthaayen Aur AYe Gham, Intezaar Ka
Aaja Charag Bujh Rahaa Hai, Tere Pyaar Ka
Don't know picturization of any of above songs.
Snehal
I have a casset on Asha's duets. One song in it was 'ude jab jab zulphe
teri..' from naya Daur, Immediately after the song, this great solo of Rafi
comes but just 4 lines. They are.
oh....o....
dil leke dagaa denge o....oooo
yaar hai matlab ke, denge to kyaa denge (2)
duniya ko dikha denge ooo....oooo (2)
yaron ke pasine pe ham khun bahaa denge
That is it. It is great singing by rafi with
great emotion.
thanx.

I am glad to be back in the US of A, and on the RMIM. I was in N. Delhi when I
heard of Ajit's death. The news was a main item on all the TV news channels,
some even showing some clips from his films, e.g., M-e-A.
I am trying to read all the messages and reply, as I go along jet lag
notwithstanding.
Reading the mail on Ajit, I found some interesting recollections by various
RMIMers on his films/song, etc.
One film, and its music, however, has been completely omitted from the
discussion so far, and that is Saiyyan, with its excellent music. BTW, this
was another film in which Ajit co-starred with Madhubala, besides those already
mentioned in various messages. Sajjan was the other star in Saiyyan, with a
'jovial' Rafi solo "Us paar iss deewaar ke jo rehte hain" picturized on him.
As long as we are only mentioning films of Ajit and Madhubala together, M-e-A
should also be included.
Saiyaan and Nastik would be the two best musicals starring Ajit, IMO.
Happy listenings.
