this question has baffled me a lot . i have seen a lot of raj kumar
films and heard a lot of his dialogues - and i am a big fan. but
everyone associates the word jaani with him. now i have not heard him
say that word in a single film. pran does use barkhurdar in many films
and om prakash does use bhaagvaan often - so when mimics use those
words in their sketches it is fine. but what about jaani.

so how did this word get stuck to him

I am quite sure he used the word in some films I saw where his role
was a LITTLE villain-ish.

Will visit some of the DVDs and find.

I remember reading an interview by him (around 1980-1985) in which he
used the word 'jaani' a lot.

yes i do believe he used that word in personal interactions. but most
of the sketches of famous artists is based on their screen mannerisms
and not on their personal mannerisms.

but this is a screen mannerism i could not find in the many raj kumar
films, that i have seen. and even if he does say this in some lesser
known film, it remains a fact that he did not say this in any of his
more famous films (not even saudagar).

but no sketch of raaj kumar leaves out jaani, just like no sketch of
sunil shetty comes without 'aye'. but then sunil shetty says that in
many films, even in balwan (his debut). but jaani!!

Wow! How can you claim to be a "big fan" of Raj Kumar not know this
Raj Kumar-101 stuff!:) ..."jaani ye chaku hai, lag jaaye to khoon
nikal aata hai"...dialog from Waqt that made Raj Kumar's dialog
delivery and the word "jaani" famous. And if you haven't done so, you
outta watch 'Waqt' right away.

please see these and let me know if you can see jaani anywhere

btw the exact line is "ye baccho.n ke khelne kee cheez nahee.n haath
kaT jaaye to Khoon nikal aataa hai"

and your mail proves my point. see you remember the sketches more than
the actual film.

Good point. Perhaps he used it outside of movies. The word has become
part of my life and am sure many
other fans life. Infact I and a friend of mine, both huge fans, start
our conversations with the word "jaani".

I have seen several of his 80's and 90's movies: Bulandi, Marte Dum
Tak,
Tiranga, Itihaas, Police Public, Betaaj Badshah but don't recall it.

I just finished watching Tiranga and he says "Jaani" once in the entire movie right at the end.

They were even advertising that its not available at other stores in our area. Needless to say I got the dvd and it was well worh.

yes. one of the first indian stars to have a fit body. but i really
don't think apart from pakeezah he could really be called an actor
playing a character. he always played raj kumar. (though that is true
for most stars). and as raj kumar i think he excelled in bulandi with
lines like

hamko miTaa sake ye zamaane me.n dum nahee.n...

and

tashreeh mulzim yaa buzdil diyaa karte hai.n. I explain never.

after the sohrab modi era, top stars would have been scared to use
'tashreeh' in a mainstream commercial movie. but raj kumar who had
started his career with sohrab. did not care two hoots. though i think
the director would have requested him to at least add the english line
so that normal people can explain. even an amitabh would have ended up
using 'safaai' or 'vajah'

but again no jaani in the film!

but thanks for cracking the code.

btw the other thing that I am trying to watch out for these days, is
shatrughn sinha and Khamosh :)

Its a pity that he got throat cancer. His voice lost a bit of its sheen in his latter movies like Betaaj Badshah and Jawab. But the dialogues of Betaaj Badshah still linger in my ears.

"ham un baadshaao.n me.n se hai.n jin par kisii bhii daur kaa asar nahii.n
hotaa, kyon kii, hamari saltanat ki sarhad insaaniyat ki dehleez se shuru
hokar reham aur imaandaari ke ilaake se guzarti huii, dil ke darvaaze par khatam hoti hai".

Its a must watch if you haven't seen since it has Shatrugan Sinha as well.
Prem Chopra, Ajit, Mukesh Khanna round up the heavy duty starcast.
