This annual war of KK-Rafi is great, but sometimes people get
carried away and within this murky fight drag in great singer like
MANNA DEY, and try to compare their classical skills.
There is no comparison between Manna Dey and Rafi in classical song
catagory, Manna Dey beats Rafi any day. It is kind of strange that
a singer with such skill could not be as successfull as Rafi or
Kishore Kumar. Mukesh should not even be considered.
some of the Manna Dey's songs
1 laga chunari main daag
2 jhanak jhanak tori baaje paayaliya
3 tere naina taalash karain jise
4 poonchon na kaise maine rain bitaii
5 kaon aaya mere ghar ke dware
6 man bhawan sangeet suhavan
7 sapt suran deen gram
and in lighter mood
chalat musafir moh liyo re
dilka haal sune dil waala
ai meri zohra zabeen
its certain that Manna Dey was also good in fun and popular songs
but was for some reason mostly handed with semi-classical songs. he
did good songs in the 50's for S-J.
So in the field of popular songs Kishore Kumar ruled, and in the
field of semi-classical songs it was Manna Dey all the way
Rafi is somewhere in the third place.

I agree that Manna was probably the singer with the best Classical
'tayyari' in the music industry.

Mind you, Rafi was not too far behind either! Don't get me wrong here;
Manna is one of my favorite singers too!
This is a qoute from Manna himself (it's not made-up!!):
"I might have been better trained classically by my uncle K. C. Dey,
but if Rafi was singing in the same film as I was, I never could be sure
he wouldn't overtake me."
Besides, Rafi himself hails from the Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan 'gharana'
which has produced some of the best classical singers.
It is kind of strange that

Manna is really unlucky, IMO, not too have made a bigger impact
in Indian Film music. My experience tells me that the more classically
trained one is, the more difficult it is, usually, to sing normal or light
film numbers. This was NOT the case with Manna. I guess dame-luck didn't
smile much for him, and sadly so! Not only was he perfect 'shruti' and
'laya' but he could convey emotions through the songs very well!

These are my favorites too! One can add 'Sur na Saje' to the list too!

'ai meri zohra zabeen' is one of my favorite qawwalis! Manna, IMO, did a
great job with the song, though it is NOT one of the tougher songs he
has sung!

I too have the same question?? IMO, he did a great job with 'Aao twist
karen' (an RDB hit).

I disagree with you on that issue. Rafi could sing Semi-Classical and
Popular songs and do them with skill and perfection too! No wonder why
he was the most sought after singer in the late 40's , 50's & the 60's.

$$$$$$ Yes, Manndaey has better base in classical school. But he arrived a little late
in to the scene. By that time Rafi was already hit with many songs. When something
is going good in market is not disturbed at all. The need to replace or prefer Manndey
over Rafi was never felt in 50s 60s and early 70s. It is like the spinners
Padmakar Shiwalker and Rajinder Goel who never got a chance in the days of Bedi.
But Voice quality of Rafi is better than Manndey, to me. It is sweeter and more free flowing
than Mannadey's. It is god given gift. That is all. Also if I have time, I would
like to hear Manndey's songs again and see whether his bengaali mothertongue has
affected hindi pronounciation. I do not have anything concrete here.
Mind you, this plays a big role. For ex, SPB is not very succesful in the hindi scene
becuase of this.

$$$$$ I will add 'kanhaa bolena.. Kanha Bolena puchu bar bar bar kanha..'
Other good songs include 'Hasne ki chhah ne kitna mujhe rulaaya hai',
'Yeh raat bhigi bhigi', 'Tu Pyaar ka sagar hai', 'kasne vade pyar vafaa sab'
'Hai mere pyare vatan hey meri.. tujhko dil khurbaan'.

$$$$$ I totally disagree with Rajiv here. Rafi could do everything very well.
