depends on where your "sa" is...based on the bit of alap that precedes
the song, it's more like todi...that too, only the lines "raina beeti
jaaye, shyaam na aaye" - the rest is something else, maybe khamaj-ish.

That's not quite what I said....I said it depends on the song. It makes
sense to discuss "aaj gaavat man mero jhuumake" as a song in Desi, or or
even "nigaahe.n milaane ko jii chaahataa hai" as a song in Yaman. But I
balk at calling "koii ham_dam na rahaa" Shivranjani or "bainyaan naa dharo
balamaa" Charukeshi. It's a grey area, and I'm not sure where I'd draw the
line. (Actually, I was hoping that somebody would try to define that
line.)
I won't categorically say that "knowing the raaga or not behind the song"
is unimportant. There's a law of diminishing returns, that's all. When a
song seems only vaguely related to any raaga structure, I'm not sure it's
worthwhile trying to pin that structure down...

um, er...Jhinjhoti (this is just Surajit typing too fast, I bet). This
is a tough one, IMO. To me, Jhinjhoti's contours are pretty specific,
and I think a lot of this song fits in, though I don't know that KK
consciously THOUGHT Jhinjhoti when he composed this.
