Folks - Back in the days of the gramaphone, I remember listening to an
LP with songs by a singer called Gulab Bai. She sang in (what I
perceived to be) a typical nautanki style and the songs were quite
catchy. The lyrics were somewhat naughty (for the 60s) and being very
young, it was left to our 16-year old fertile imaginations(minus
sufficient vocabulary skills) to figure out what she was actually
double entendre-ing about. Yes 16-year olds were pretty innocent in
those days. Now that I am nearing my 60s and in a galaxy far away,
I've got to find out what the fuss was all about and why the elders
did not approve of us listening to (and enjoying) that LP. Alas, that
LP is no where to be found. Neither is Gulab Bai (who would probably
be more than 100 years old by now). Nor are any of those 16 year-olds.

Does anyone else on this RMIM group remember the Gulab Bai LP. Can
anyone point me to a site that has those recordings.

Thanks in advance ... V

There was no LP issued for this singer. Only two EPs were
released: # 7EPE 17528 / 4 songs from 78 rpm records. I don't have
the other EP # 17522

The most popular song is:

Nadi Nare Na Jao Shyam.

Sunil Dutt the producer of MUJHE JEENE DO, picked us this
number, as is and had it recorded in the voice of Asha. The 78 rpm
version is exactly same (lyrics, as well as the tune) as the original
song (a 'dadra'). However, the Gulab Bai's version is much more
pleasing than the Asha's version.

The songs which you might have found to be out-of-synch with
good taste might have been:

Main Hoon Teri Charpai (I am your Bed)

Haye Piya Jagawe Lagle

Aai Jawani Bairan

I don't know how bad their lyrics are, because I had listened to them
only once. In my music collection, many songs were given
Sazaa-e-Kala Pani.

Sudhir

P.S.: The 2nd EP, lusts a song: Moko Pihar Mein Mat - which probably
is the source song for Mujhe Jeene Do's 2nd song and then there
is a listing for a song in 2nd category:

Ghus Aayo Moro Kamra Mein

Indeed there is a Gulab Bai LP with these 12 songs:

1) Nadi nare na jao Shyam 2) Akeli dar laage
3) Ber ber bagia 4) Todi palangwa ki paati
5) Sehr chhod na ja Shyam 6) Moko peehar men mat chhede
7) Raat piya baahar gaye 8) Main hoon teri charpai
9) Jasoda tera laala bada 10) More banwari
11) Ghus aayo more kamra men 12) Aai jawani bairan

By about 1970, this LP was out of print. Its appeal was
naughty words and themes rather than music. I made
an audio cassette from this LP about 35 years ago and
still have it.

The Gramaphone company released song # 2, 3, 6 & 11
in 1976 on 7EPE 17522 ( I have this one).
Song # 1, 7, 8 & 12 are included on 7EPE 17528 as noted
by Sudhir ( I do not have this one).

V, there is still a chance you may get to hear Gulab Bai.
