Recently attended Sunil Mungee concert in Chicago organised by the
Maharashtra mandal-chicago. The the name of the programme was
'ABHISHEKI-DARSHAN' as a tribute to the Late Pt. Abhisheki. It was
nice to hear a young vocalist with such a rich and melodious voice. He
started the programme with a famous marathi bhavgeet 'Majhe jeevan
gaane' and sang many other famous compositions sung by Pt. Abhisheki.
Over all the programme was a success but i would like to throw light
to the following aspects.
He started the programme with 'MAJHE JEEVAN GAANE' and went on
prolonging it for almost 20 mts going into all different ragas and
doing gimmicks which did not do justice to the composition. All along
the programme he did not establish the mood of the compositions, it
was more of a Mungee Darshan than Abhisheki Darshan. To make it worse
he started Sawal-Jawab with the tabla player which was very
inappropriate and uncalled for. Why do Sawal-Jawab in Bhajans and
Bhavageet. Some of the main and important compositions of Abhisheki
which were produced as a Farmaish were only sung in one line. During
some of the serious songs like 'Kaata Rute' he let the tabla player do
a Tabla-solo. All these things were really disturbing for the real
Dardi-Listeners. Sunil Mungee is surely a Talanted and a Tayaar singer
and should not lose focus and get into gimmickry. I wish him all the
best.
