I received several responses to my earlier posting on the Carnatic
Music Association of North America, requesting additional information
about membership fees, tape library and so on. I apologize if this
sounds like a membership drive. It is not. I am only trying to
serve the interests of Carnatic Music.
The basic membership in CMANA is $100 valid for a lifetime. One can
become a patron member for an additional $400. There are number of
patron members (including myself). Patron members receive some
special benefits such as two free tickets to CMANA-sponsored
concerts per year, center seating and automatic membership for spouses.
(BTW, all contributions to CMANA, including buying tapes are
tax-deductible). Basic membership entitles one to regular
deliveries of Sangeetham, discount tickets for CMANA-sponsored
concerts ($2 off) and some discounts on tapes. There are other
categories of memberships - Junior and Honorary. Honorary patrons
include Dr.Robert Browning,Dr.P.Rajagopalan (founder), Ramnad
Raghavan and Sangeetha Kalanidhi T.Viswanathan, recognized by
CMANA for their lasting contributions to Carnatic Music in
North America.
The latest issue of Sangeetham just came out and has some interesting
articles on Thyagaraja, Maharajapuram Santhanam, Swati Tirunal,
crossword puzzles, etc. Sangeetham subscription by itself is
$15 per year. There is no clear CMANA policy on partial payments
to help students on a shoe-string budget. Perhaps it can be
worked out on a one-on-one basis.
The tape library is listed in each issue of Sangeetham. To be quite
honest, some tapes are well recorded and others are not, especially
those recorded during the earlier days of CMANA. I would be more than
happy to talk to anybody about the tape list. It would be too
time consuming to list them all here.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
