If you're looking for Hindustani, don't look for the name Hamir or Hamir
Kalyaan, as this is a different raga (notes same, but strands very
differently woven). Hindustani Kedar is pretty close (not to Carnatic
Kedaram, but to Hamir Kalyaani).

On the Carnatic side, Lalgudi Jayaraman has composed a good tillana in H-K.
You can find it on his album "Thillanas - The Dance Of Sound". Aside from the
orchestration being a little ridiculous (imagine a brass band playing H-K
next to Lalgudi), the composition is pretty good.

Good luck.

I havent come across too many Amir Kalyani recordings. Atleast none of them are
exhaustive, i.e. with raga alapana and swara signing. The ones that I know of
other than the thillana mentioned by Sanjeev are :
1. Krishna Gaanam - T.N. Seshagopalan - has a Amir Kalyani song
2. Tiruppavai - The song "Thoomani Maadathu"
(Many artists have recorded the Tiruppavai. They include
Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, K V NarayanaSwamy, M L VasanthaKumari)

There is a pre-recorded tape of DK Jayaraman with a classic rendition of the
DIkshitar krithi " Purahara Nandana " (Hamirkalyani). BTW, I understand that
Rashid Khan (hindustani vocalist) is a fan of KVN and in live concerts, sings
alapana of hamir kalyani followed with the neraval of the pallavi "thoomani
madathu".

Was the D K jayaraman tape released by AVM? There is one double album of
D K Pattammal, Music Academy Live, in which she sings Toomani Madathu. I
have heard T N Seshagopalan once do an extensive alapana before singing
this Tiruppavai. I guess this was a Tamil Isai Sangam concert which was
broadcast on the radio. Unfortunately no recording exists.

That was an interesting bit of info on Rashid Khan.

Hi there, If you do not mind instrumental, then there is a cassette of
Doreswamy Iyengar's veena. The first item there is "Venkatasaila Vihara" in
Hamir Kalyani. There is a brief alapana and swaram too; the entire piece is
some 14 minutes long. The tape is released by Music Today (No. C91014). The
other items are "ChintayaMakanda" in Bhairavi, a ghana ragamaalika taanam and
a tilana in Kapi. Regards Arvind V

Where does one come across "Music Today" recordings? Are they available in the
U.S.?
I'd be grateful for information.
bye!

This may be worth a try:

http://www.khazana.com/cd/

Not sure that Khazana has that particular label, but they do have a lot
of recordings.
