There are loads of compilations out there that bring together their
best ghazals, but I only want to know of their best original albums.
What are their classic works?
Of Ghulam Ali, I have Meraj e ghazal, which I think is very good and
also have Visaal, which has a few good tracks but is a bit of a
letdown overall.
Many thanks in advance for your help!
I do not think anyone can help you.It is a personal choice.Commercial
producers mix good with bad.You may choose those which you like and
get a cassette or Cd made of those gazals.
HMV/EMI has a compilation of Mehdi Hasan's ghazals (studio recordings)
that bears the name (I think), 'The Finest Ghazals'. It starts with
'ranjessh hi sahi', followed by 'patta patta boota boota', etc. It has
other lovlies like 'aye kuchh abr', 'phool hi phool khil uthe', etc.
The other songs from this album are (recalling from memory):
mujhe tum nazar se
baat karni mujhe
dekh to dil ke
gulon mein rang bhare
gulshan gulshan shola-e-gul
In my opinion, a top class collection. I do not understand the nuances
of Urdu very much but the singer's tonal quality & his sureelapan
floors me completely.
Regards-Archisman.
I agree wholeheartedly with this assessment - a few other songs I
remember from it are "Sataa-Sataa Ke Hamen", "Khuda Kare Ke Mohabbat
Men", and "Nawaazish Karam Shukriya Meherbaani" (this last one is a
favorite of mine). These are presented as the film versions, and may
not be as sophisticated as some of the gazals, but I echo the
sentiments voiced about tonal quality, etc.
I believe that other Mehdi Hassan compilations featuring different
songs but of a similar mood mix and era are also available.

I second this album (Live in USA) wholeheartedly. MH's voice is much
"older" than in the album Archisman and Sanjeev have extolled, but
that doesn't detract from the quality of this album in the least.
Another MH album I like quite a bit is one labeled "Classical
Ghazals":
http://www.amazon.com/Classical-Ghazals-Medhi-Hassan/dp/B000005SFD
The star attractions for me here are CD2-item3 (2.3) and CD3-item2
(3.2). The ghazal at 3.2 is set to a Vachaspati-derived tune -- the
tune is fairly simplistic, but it's quite well sung. The Ghazal at
2.3 is in a raga which Mehdi Hassan describes with words like "ye
ba.Daa behangam raag hai" on the CD. It *does* sound like an awkward
scale -- it's Charukeshi-sans-PA, as near as I can tell (try it) --
but the dexterity with which MH handles is worth hearing!
But by far the most attractive feature of this CD (to me) is the
sarangi accompaniment -- it's the only sarangi-wala MH album I have
heard. The accompaniment is by (ustad) Sultan Khan.
The other ghazals on the collection are ones that have been featured
elsewhere, but he is in fine fettle here and does an excellent job
with them. The quality of the Thumri/Dadra etc is not something I am
capable of commenting on from a technical standpoint, but they sound
good enough to me.

Nitpick - it's got teevra Ma, so you'd be looking for the
pratimadhyama counterpart of Charukeshi (can't remember the name of
that scale offhand). The no-Pancham raag as you probably remember is
referred to here as "Sehra", and corresponds to the "whole-tone
scale" (all notes equidistant). It was discussed years ago on RMIM/
RMIC.
Sanjeev
Rishabhapriya?
> The no-Pancham raag as you probably remember is referred to here as "Sehra"
Nitpick: Sahera
Both Debussy's whole tone scale <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Whole_tone_scale> and the janya raga Gopriya are identical to this,
would appreciate further info on the last. Was it discussed on the
RMIC thread on Sahera?
Incidentally, the raga Harikauns is an extension of this concept. S g
m and D are spaced three semitones apart (as opposed to to Sahera/
Gopriya's two); the spoiler is the n, which some people opine adds a
semblance of comprehensibility to the venture.
Abhik
Yes, about the teevra Ma (been awhile since I heard that Ghazal, as
you can probably tell). Rishabhapriya is the pratimadhyama
counterpart of Charukeshi.
