Kindly let me know where I can get this kind of information. I have
been searching the net for the past 3 hours, and found many artists who
have played this raga or movie songs based on this raga, but nothing
about the history and background on Kalawati.
Thanks in advance for you help.

rAgalakShaNa mattu rAgakOsha - by the same author gives in page 94 the
following details about this karnatic rAga:
ArOhaNa: S R1 M1 P D2 S' avarOhaNa: S' D2; P M1 G3 S R1 S
This rAga is upAnga janya in chakravAka mELa. It is "auDava - ShADava"
rAga. GA and NI are not allowed in ArOhaNa. NI is not allowed in
avarOhaNa. - vakra, ShADava. - RiShaBa graha. - sARvakAlika rAga. It
generates niRvEda BAva, BIBatsa rasa. Not an anicient rAga. Sri
tyAgarAja's compositions, "ennuDubotuno" and "okapAri jUDaga" have been
composed in this rAga.
Further to this the author gives six lines of sanchaara in this rAga.
Kalavati was popularized in Maharastra by Pt. Rao Nagarkar, Roshan Ara
Begum and Gangubai Hangal.
Hindustani Kalavati has nothing do do with the Carnatic counterpart. It
is a Khamaj that raag. It's rather resembles the carnatic raag
Malayamaruta.
An interesting character of Kalavati is its relation to Abhogi Kanada:
taking Madya as the new sa one gets in fact raag Kalavati.
B.S. Rao has a very complete description of Kalavati. He stresses the
resemblances between Kalavati and Durga in aroha (SRMPDSR) and to
Hevriti in avaroha.( I have never heard of the latter btw.) Other
descriptions may be found in J.D. Patki and V.R.
Patwardhan.
As to recordings I'd suggest: Amir Khan, Roshan Ara Begum, Prabha Atre,
Nazakat and Salamat, with Imrat Khan and Vilayat Khan on the
instrumental side. Among recent recordings I think Arati Ankalikar's
version is a fine one.
