I am helping someone prepare a brochure for a hindustani recital.
I need information on Raga Kalawati -- its history, earliest
compositions, etc.

Kindly let me know where I can get this kind of information. I have
been searching the net for the past 3 hours, and found many artists who
have played this raga or movie songs based on this raga, but nothing
about the history and background on Kalawati.

Thanks in advance for you help.

I had heard that it has come from Carnatic. On googling I find
differing opinions. ITC-SRA http://www.itcsra.org/sra_faq_index.html
says under No. 5 "What are the similarities and differences between
'Hindustani' and 'Carnatic' music?": "There is a third category of
ragas like Hamsadhwani, Charukeshi, Kalavati etc. which are essentially
Carnatic Ragas. They share the same name, the same scale ..." OTOH
karnATik http://www.geocities.com/promiserani2/hcragatable.html says
under "Equivalent (and Near-Equivalent) Ragas in Hindustani and
Carnatic Music" in tabular form that Hindustani Raga kalAvati of That#3
is Carnatic Raga valaji of Mela#16. Hope someone settles the matter
for raghu.

I dont think this is true regd. KalAvati. It goes by the name Valachi
(Valaji) in Carnatic. However, there does exist a raga called KalAvati
in carnatic under the same 16th melakartha.

my 2 cents,
Kedar.

Found this in Moutal's Comparative study of selected Hindustani Raags:

Kalavati was popularized in Maharastra by Pt. Rao Nagarkar, Roshan Ara
Begum and Gangubai Hangal.
Hindustani Kalavati has nothing do do with the Carnatic counterpart. It
is a Khamaj that raag. It's rather resembles the carnatic raag
Malayamaruta.
An interesting character of Kalavati is its relation to Abhogi Kanada:
taking Madya as the new sa one gets in fact raag Kalavati.
B.S. Rao has a very complete description of Kalavati. He stresses the
resemblances between Kalavati and Durga in aroha (SRMPDSR) and to
Hevriti in avaroha.( I have never heard of the latter btw.) Other
descriptions may be found in J.D. Patki and V.R.
Patwardhan.

As to recordings I'd suggest: Amir Khan, Roshan Ara Begum, Prabha Atre,
Nazakat and Salamat, with Imrat Khan and Vilayat Khan on the
instrumental side. Among recent recordings I think Arati Ankalikar's
version is a fine one.

Dikshitar has also composed a song in this raga - "kalaavati
kamalaasana yuvati" popularized by late Dr. S. Ramanathan and Sowmya.
