I remember just a few lines..

Eppadi Padinaro, Appadi Padanan Aasai Konden Shivane
(As they sang so also I desire to sing oh Lord Shiva)

Apparum Sundararum Arudai Pillaiyum
Arul mani Vachakarum Porul unarndu unnaye

(gives the names of the all the singers - (Appar Sundarar etc)
Porul Unarndu Unnaye - By understanding the essense)

Cannot remember anymore..

putting it all together with minor corrections. But of course, I could be
wrong! The translations are literal, in ase you were trying to understand
the tamizh words literally.

(In the way appar, sundarar, Arudai pillai and ManivAchakar with knowledge
and understanding (I am actually stumped in trying to translate
porulunarndhu here!) sung in praise of you)

Translation,
Tamil words in Italics, implied english words in parenthesis. The verse in
tamil, follwed by translation in English

eppadip paadinaroa adiyaar
appadip paada naan aasai kondaen sivanae (eppadip)

I desire to sing of you oh Siva, in the way your devotees (adiyaar) sang

apparum sundhararum aaludaip pillaiyum
arul manivaasagarum porulunarndhae unnaiyae (eppadip)

(As) (the saints) Appar, Sundararar, Aaludaippillai and manivasagar sang of
you with knowledge and understanding

manivaasagar is a reference to Maanikkavasagar, a great Tamil poet

the tamil word ' porulunarndu' is literally translated as 'knowing the
meaning'. It is also used here, in the context of saints, to indicate
knowledge of the Truth (Brahman)

Beautiful words, but to my knowledge there is no work of Sankara in Tamil.
So why is Gurumani Sankarar singing in Kannith Tamizh Chol? :-)

Great job in transliteration and commentary! However, I take exception to
your interpretation of "Kanithamizh". You wrote in this form but
interpreted it as "Kannithamizh". Notice the difference? The first one as I
know the song is sung, means "kani" i.e., fruit. Thamizh that is as sweet
as a fruit! While your interpretation of "kannithamizh" i.e., "virgin"
"chaste" is an acceptable alternative, the verse favors the former.
Also, "Aaludaippillai" refers to Thirugnana Sambhandar (one of the saivait
quartet) who was fed divine milk and started composing Tamil devotional
songs when he was still a child.

interesting point. when i heard the song, i always thought it emphasized
Kannithamizh, but kaniththamizh works just as well. Aesthetically, i must
confess, i prefer kannithamizh (a favorite word of bharathiyar) as in chaste
tamil.

anybody give the definitive answer on this? is it kanithamizh or kannithamizh?
