The recording you mention is from Rhythm House and she has recorded some other
ones ( I think) for that company. She has recorded for HMV (I have that
recording at home of Bhoop-Nat, Kedara, and Khambavati.)
She has just recorded for Navaras and two recordings put out by the Fountain
label very recently. . She has also recorded for Music Today in the Bhaktimala
and the Young Masters series
So.. she is recording. Last t ime I saw her was a few years back in Vrindavana
singing at the Haridas Sangit Samaroha. She looked rather tired singing a
somewhat uninspired Vibhas. It seemed it was definitely way too early for her
in the morning.
Go to the websites of Shrimatis or Visa Mail Order sites for INdian music.
and look her up that way. I think you will get
what you are looking for. Their sites deal in CDs... I have her cassettes but
I think that you will get what you want.
Yours,
Sandip.

She also has an HMV album where she has sung Yaman, Tilak Kamod, and a
Meera bhajan. In fact, IIRC, this was her debut album.

yes she has. this is in a release called "ashwini bhide sings morning
ragas", by rhythm house - it includes lalit, todi, kabiri bhairav, in
sukhiya bilaawal.
by the way, mallikarjun mansur had recorded (what was labelled as)
kukubh bilaawal for the music today "morning ragas" collection. is this
for real? any details on these two prakaars of bilaawal?

Yes, it is Kukubh alright.

Consider Sukhiya as a take-home problem which you
have to figure out. We expect you to post the
'solution' by the end of this week.
Briefly: Kukubh is distinguished by its poorvAnga,
in particular the special attack on the rishab. Elements
of Jaijaivanti and Jhinjhoti are also found. The precise
treatment in the madhya saptak varies. Nevertheless, the
following two features will be found in all the versions:
(a) The bilAval molecule - P P ND N S"; and the bilAvalic
komal nishAd - S" D n P or P D n D P or S" D n D P etc.
(b) The treatment of the shuddha rishab tugged with
the gandhAr (Kukubh's signature) - P M G R S N' S (G)R...
This portion lends the rAga great beauty. A trace of Jhinjhoti
is inserted (and when combined with the rishab treatment just
stated, makes for Mallikarjun's mukhDA), to wit -
G R G S R S (G)R. Notice that the tonal sentence concludes
with the tugged rishab.
Mallikarjun's is a superb rendition. For another beautiful
demonstration of Kukubh's features and a different interpretation,
listen to Mr Khan's brief AlAp on the album "Legacy." Bhatkhande's
own bandish in jhaptAla "kAhe bhajana bina khovata umara 'chatura'"
is a classic. Ramashreya Jha also has a beauty ("sumirana kara
le re mana") which I understand is often sung by C.R. Vyas.
Buddhadeb Dasgupta has also recorded Kukubh but I haven't as yet
laid my hands on it.

That should have beeen: M G M R G S (G)R
