Dear Netters,
Does a raga by name "Vishnupriya" exist? If it does, could you please
answer the following queries:
1) what is the aarohanam and avarohanam of Vishnupriya?
2) From which Melakartha raga is it derived?
3) By any chance, is it another name for the raga "Deepakam"?
Regards
Gopal

It is a janyam of the 32nd melakarta Raagavardhani.

No, it is not the same as Deepakam. Deepakam is a janya of
Pantuvarali (51st melakarta) and its aarohanam/avarohanam is
S G3 M2 P N3 S
S N3 D1 P M2 G3 R1 S (?)
I think there are some P D1 P phrases - maybe other such
characteristic phrases too.

There is at least one composition in Vishnupriya; Tanjavur Sankara Iyer's
"bAlasubrahmaNyan pAdamE tuNai"
I remember TVSankaranarayanan rendering this composition at a concert held
in IIT-M in 1982. Tanjavur Sankara Iyer was present in the audience; TVS
made it a point to mention all the particulars (rAga name/scale/composer)
at the end of his brief AlApana. He rendered the kriti in his own breezy
style and followed it up with electrifying svaras; MSG accompanied TVS
very well and even outclassed him with some fantastic phrases (which was
all the more impressive since it seemed like he was unaware of this rAga
and kriti till then).

Well, actually MSG nudged him and asked him give out the
aarohaNam/avarohaNam.

That's probably the reason he played 'Sa Ri Ga' a couple of times !

As an aside, MSG excels in handling Vivadhi ragas. Prof. SRJ
during his lecture-demo of Mela-raga_malika (Dec.89) said that the
Vivadhi ragas are the 'family property (parambarai sothu) of the Parur
family (he was accompanied by MSG's nephew in that program)
