Hi

Was listening to a recording of this raga by Mushtaq Hussain Khan last
night. It contains quite a few instances of shuddh ga, which I thought
was not on in this raga. Is this a case of a singer of advanced years
making some errors of voice control, or is the occasional use of shuddh
ga a permissible variety of this rag.

Please mail and post replies, as my receipt of postings on this newsgroup
is patchy.

The fairly wide interval between the shuddha madhyam and
the komal rishab makes the grace of an intermediate swara
compelling in descent. Since Gunakali is a bhairavAnga
rAga the natural choice for this intermediary is the
shuddha gandhAr. Apropos of the issue, the following
was posted some months ago.

The answer to your very last question about the shuddha
rishab is no.

Gunakri is a bhairavAnga rAga, nominally of the oDava jAti,
and employs the S r M P d swaras (M=shuddha). The bhairavAnga
is highlighted by the nyAsa on and Andolans about the komal
dhaivat and the komal rishab. The pancham is also a strong
swara. De-emphasis of the madhyam is required to distance Jogiya.

Kumar Gandharva's sui generis treatment steps out of the strict
pentatonic bounds in special ways. The 'vivAdi' swaras (G, n, N)
are touched upon in descent only (avarohAtmak), the gandhAr being
fairly piquant (in the mukhDA of the composition itself, for
instance, via a quick flourish of the kind P M G r S). The shuddha
nishAd is graced en route from the tAr shaDaj to the komal
dhaivat of the madhya saptak via a meenD (S"....(N)d). The komal
nishAd figures occasionally in a quick trill: MPdnDPMGrS.

These 'transgressions' in Gunakri are not unique to KumarG but
his manner of execution is. The peripheral 'machinery' indicated
above is handled carefully. This is shruti-manohar gAyaki at its
sublime best. Compare KumarG's treatment with another marvellous
rendition of Gunakri in Patiala's Fateh Ali Khan.

Warm regards,
