Pt Gurav died last night (7 May 2014), aged 86. He is survived by wife, two sons, and two daughters.
Guravji hails from erstwhile princely state of Jamkhandi where his father Ganpatrao Gurav was a court mucisian. Ganpatrao was a direct disciple of Abdul Karim Khan. Sangameshwarji groomed under the tutelage of his father and settled in Dharwad. He was a teaching faculty in the music department of Karnatak University where he worked alongside Mallikarjun Mansur, Basavraj Rajguru, and Gangubai Hangal.
Pt Gurav was recipient of numerous awards and trained quite a few disciples. His son Kaivalya Kumar continues the musical lineage. His other son Nandikeshwar is a tabla artist employed at Karnatak University. Shashikala Kulhalli, his daughter, is also a vocalist.
