Hello,

I wanted to know what 'Ekhara Tans' and 'Gayaki Ang' (reproducing
singing style in an instrument??) mean, and would be happy if someone
could shed some light on it. I keep hearing Ud. AmjadAK is known for
his ekhara tans, so just wondered. thanks a bunch.

regards

One presumes that you are familiar with the instrument and their
bol/baaz, ie da, da ra, dir dir etc..
Take a taan, for instance sa re ga ma ga re sa.
This can be plucked/stroked on the sarod as dir dir dir dir dir dir
dir.(Here each dir is for each note, ie sa re etc)
Now in ekhara tanans, (also called da ra taans) the storkes would be
da ra da ra da re da. Here da is the downward storke on the string and
ra is the upward stroke. Each stroke ie da and ra are for each note ie
sa re ga ma etc. In fact, at a given time, you end up playing twice
the number of notes than compared to dir dir taans...

So when played, this sounds quite fast a taan like a sapat taan. This
is a bit difficult on the sarod owing to its design, lack of frets
etc...But sounds great if great hands such as Ustad Amjad ALi Khan,
Buddhdev Das Gupta and quite a few others perform!
A close listening to their recordings will help clear the difference.
Suggested listening is any album of Am ALi Kh where he would be
playing the madhya laya composition. Try the Bihag/Pilu album...

Else, visit http://www.bhargavmistry.com/sarod and there in, there are
some clippings of these taans of dir dir, da ra and ghasit types
etc...
