I recently heard a CD by Dr. S. Ramanathan, containing Ragas
Bhavaani and Lalitha. I do not know the Hindustaani
equivalent of either raaga. I find both of these raagas
extremely absorbing. Would appreciate someone pointing me
to some more CDs/Cassettes with these raagas. If anyone
has some music, would appreciate a recording (call me
at 904 828 0091).

:-)

I think the equivalent of Lalitha is ODaiva-bilAval. No idea about
Bhavaani though.

My 2 cents:

I have a cassette, "Balaji Pancharatnamala" by MS. There is a beautiful
composition, "Natanala bhramayaku naa manasaa" in the raga Lalitha.

Reg. Bhavani, I recently bought a CD, "Bindhumalini", by Sudha Raghunathan
which has a composition. "unnai andri utra thunai ulagil yarayya" in the
raga Bhavani.

(PS: From tamil cinema, the song 'ithazhil kathai ezhudum naeramithu',
[movie: unnal mudiyum thambi] I think, is in Lalitha.)

My father Dr S.Ramanathan has taught us 'Nannu Brova' of Syama sastri and
'Hiranmayim' of Dikshitar in Lalitha and 'Bhavapriyae Bhavaani' in
Bhavani. We have heard the other Dhandapani Desikar's composition in
Bhavani 'Unnai andri' sung by Desikar himself. The first ever cassette
released by 'Sangeetha' is the one which is available as a CD now
containing Gurjari,Bilahari,Lalitha, Bhavani,etc.

In article <5b89hc$9...@newton.pacific.net.sg>,

Some info on this recording is at
http://www.medieval.org/music/world/cds/omi5017.html

Corrections are welcome. This is one of many which I found in a
version with virtually no information attached, and I have cobbled
it together subsequently.

(I wish I could have heard Dr S.Ramanathan sing Hiranmayim Lakshmim!)

A really great song in bhaVaNi is "Shri vishwaNatham bhajare.." by M.Dhskithar.
Listen to that one if you have a chance. Sorry, don't know of any recordings,
learnt it from my mother.

Another nice song in Bhavani that I remember is "kani karambuthO" often
sung by Tanjavur Kalyanaraman. ( I read in a recent Hindu review that
the composer is one Kalyani Varadarajan; does anyone know any details of
this composer ? Can anyone else confirm the composer's identity? )
Another "great" Bhavani raga alapana I will always remember is when
Madurai Somasundaram , in one of his last concerts, sang the raga as a
prelude to a Thiruppugazh he had tuned in Bhavani. The occasion was
AruNagirinathar Day , at Vadapazhani Temple in Madras. The time was past
midnight and Somu charmed the audience with his inimitable rendering of
the raga, first in the Carnatic mode , then in the Nadhaswara style
and then in a North Indian, Hindusthani-style interpretation .
