I am looking for the name of the raga and the lyrics of the Purandara
Das composition "Yaake Nirdaya...". I am not sure I even got the first
2 words of the song right.

Thanks.

The song has been rendered in several ragas by different people.
Ragamalika, Kambhoji, Shubhapantuvarali etc. Here is the text.

Thanks a lot Mr Ragde for the information. I really appreciate it.

I heard this sung by Unnikrishnan and on the cassette box it says raga
is Charumati. I have never heard of this raga and there were other
mistakes on the box, so I was wondering. Also, a more knowledgeable
person told me the song seems to be in Gaudmalhar. I am hoping either
you or someone else who heard the Unnikrishnan version would be able
to throw more light on this.

Also, Unnikrishnan sings it as "ena mella" instead of "ena mEle". Is
that acceptable?

Thanks.

The raga Unnikrishnan used is Saramati. One type of hindustani Kaushi kanada is the nearest
equivalent. As for 'ena malle', you will have to ask someone knowledgeable in kannada for the
correct context.

Neither 'ena malle' nor 'ena mella' makes sense in this context - it should be
'ena mEle'. I have heard Sudha Raghunathan's rendition of the same.

There is one another remarkably lucid composition by Purandara Dasa on the 'yAke
nirdaya' theme, the prelude starts with 'manO vachanagaLali kAya karmagaLali'
and then the main composition 'yAke nirdayanaguvE rangayya ranga' -set to rAga
ranjani/adi tAla and sung movingly by Smt. Vani Sateesh.

The correct words should be "enna mEle" (pronounced "yanna mEle"),
meaning "on me." Here Purandaradasa literally says, "ShrikAnta,
you do not have on me even a sesame seed's worth of compassion."
The sesame seed here refers to the size or amount (of compassion).

Best wishes,

Nachiketa
