I have been using the Ragini Pro (tanpura) and the Riyaz Master (tabla) for
some years now - they were the ones with best sound then. Are there any
improved models today?
On the Radel website (http://www.radelindia.com/PROD-SAARANG.htm) I note a
few newer products - there is a Sarang-Miraj tanpura and a Taalmala Digi-100
(at http://www.radelindia.com/listprod.asp) - has anyone seen and heard
these? Or the "Taal-Tarang" (tabla) or the "Swar-Sudha" (tanpura) advertised
at http://www.pakrashi-harmonium.com/electronic-musical-instruments.html ?
Thanks.

1. Ragini Digital Tanpura.
It is very accurate and because it has digital steps for frequency
adjustment. It stays accurate always. The older version had an analog
frequency control. It needed frequent frequency adjustment. I have
tried both.
2. Sur Sangeet Professional.
This had the best tonal quality but quite expensive in the Bay area.
However it broke down after about a year. Being an engineeer I opened
to see if I could change some ICs to fix it. However the manufacturers
had sanded out the part numbers. They did not want to reveal the parts
lest some one may copy and market their product.(Old Indian tradition
to pass knowledge only to your sons othrwise die with the knowledge. We
never invented any patent protections ) So on my next trip tp India I
bought another one.
However technology doesn't stand still. http://www.swarsystems.com in
Switzerland developed Software called Swarshala. which plays both
Tanpura and Tabla and can be set to any key very accurately.
Swarsystems even has Indian instrument SW for MIDI keyboards which can
be used for composing elaborate Indian songs and tunes.
So now I use my PC and Laptop with Swarshala for all my riyaaz at home
and when I am traveling.
Wish you all the best

As far as the Electronic Tanpura goes; Raagini Digital is the Best,
It's the improved version of the Raagini Pro. The Tonal quality of
the Raagini Digital is Excellent. Hands Down Winner!!!
Taal Tarang Digital is the ideal upgrade for the Riyaz Master. It has a
much much improved tonal quality. Large selection of Thekas & 4
different instruments too. Check out this site they have audio of the
same.

In the same site U can get to know bout the new improved electronic
shruti box - Swar Sudha also.

PS: There is a rumor that an Electronic Mridangam has been launched by
the same Bombay people, a friend said he has seen & heard it, but I
could not find it in the stores or on their website... Any Info guys???
Do the samples sound like the taanpuras were recorded recently? In
other words, do they sound like ones you'd hear on contemporary
recordings?
>Also there is one newer tanpura machine
>out in the market released by Nitin Amin from pune in which you can
>tune the indivitual taars.
Do you find this machine more sonically satisfying?
