Who are the best tabla players of our generation ?
I would be inclined choose the following
1. Zakir Hussain
2. Swapan Chowdhury
3. Kumar Bose
4. Sabir Khan
5. Shafaat Ahmed Khan
in that order.
Kumar Bose is a rising tabla player noted for his creative play
and harmonious accompaniment skills. He is one of Ravi Shankar's
favourites.

This is not a bad list of tabla players at all, but one must remember
that there are many excellent players virtually unknown outside of India
who are not yet appearing on the "big labels". I would like to add two
outstanding players to the list:
1) M. Akram Khan - Ajrara gharana, living in Delhi
2) M. Sattar Khan - Punjab gharana, living in New Jersey

We also seem to forget that Shankar Ghosh is alive and well. And what
about Anindo Chatterjee who has one of the cleanest hands in the business?

Anindo Chatterjee seems to be missing from the list. Personally
speaking I find Swapan-da's and Anindo-da's playing to be more enjoyable than
those of the others.

While Kumar Bose's thekas are, shall we say, highly confident and Ravi
Shankar gives him a lot of time at concerts -- somehow I feel that there is a
lack of sweetness in his playing.

Btw, you must be aware that this topic has been the cause for serious
rifts on the net before.

heart attack but still an excellent teacher)
5. Ananda Gopal Bannerjee

8. Kashinath Misra
9. Bibhas Nageskar

Among the newcomers: (DO NOT FORGET THESE GUYS)

The contemporary generation I am assuming....

This list is not complete. If your decision is based on packaged
materials that are available in the market today (in USA and UK)
which are composed of live recordings etc., your chart seems ok.

Why is that ?

Personally

I agree. But with reservation. Anindo Chatterjee has an extremely good
hand with instrumentalists but when it comes to Vocalists I found him a
bit annoying. On the other hand, I found Swapan Choudhury, even with a
broken finger, very soothing and esthetically superior than anybody in
the list above. With vocalists a lot of Tabla players mentioned above
I had a hard time to listen to. I would prefer Samar Saha with a vocalist
anytime with the exception of Swapan Choudhury.

If you are used to listening to Allah rakha with ravi Shankar, I bet you,
you won't like Kumar Bose. There is a difference in "theka-dari" which
came from two distinctly different "gharanas". Give it some time you will
get used to
it. Kumar Bose is a fine tabla player - there is nothing wrong with his
"theka".

Dear Stone,
I wonder why Samta Prasad has never been mentioned as a stylist of his
own.

Santa Prasad is undoubtedly one of the greatest tabla players India
has produced.Unfortunately he is no more with us.The discussion started
was on tabla players of our generation.Probably Kishen Maharaj is also not
eligible or even Shankar Ghosh.

Add to the list : Nayan Ghosh, son of Nikhil Ghosh, famous Tabla
Player, based in Bombay. I heard him three years back in Mpls with Rajeev
Taranath and he was quite fabulous. He is also an accomplished Sitar player.
very few can master two instruments so well. Among the younger crop,
Sukhwinder namadhari has impressed me quite a bit. He was here with Vishwa
Mohan Bhatt last April and after a long time I got to hear some solid
Benarasi thekas and gats from him. Very solid accompaniment without the
carvings for releasing those ever popular machine gun relas that we have
gotten so used to hearing. Vijay Ghate is another promising one. He is a
student of Suresh Talwalkar and accompanied Shahid Parvez and D.K.Datar
in Mpls. He tends to get a little loud and Zakiresque at times. One of Kumar
Bose's students, Kaushik Sen, is also very good. I got to hear him a lot
last Fall while he was in residence in Mpls.

One Tabla player conspicuously absent from the above list has got to
be Abdul Sattar Tari Khan, grand guru bhai of Zakir. (Both his and Zakir's
guru's (Alla Rakha) were the Shagirds of Kader Baksh of Punjab Gharana). His
playing is simply awesome. Check him out with some of Nusret Fateh Ali Khan's
classical recordings or with Mehdi Hassan's Ghazals. he was also the long time
Tabla player of Ghulam Ali but they had a split later on. IMHO, he is the
very best Tabla player for Ghazal accompaniment ever. His laggis and variations
of relas and ladis are simply magical.

More later ...

I most certainly agree! He has such a musical approach to his playing. A
co-disciple of his, Aneesh Pradhan is pretty snappy, and touring a lot.
Australia is lucky to have him here about once a year.
Nayan, when are you coming back?

Gorgeous is a word that springs to my mind.
