The one I have is 12:42, and I probably got it from Aftab Datta's
folder on esnips.

Yes, and that one is incomplete. The complete one is a full LP, one
side. I know who has that LP, but don't have access there. Bad!!
> Yes, and that one is incomplete. The complete one is a full LP ...
LP covers had room for plenty of text. Ravi Shankar claims that Raga
Nat Bhairav is his creation. What was the take on the cover of that
LP? What are the words of the bandishes? Is there a rubaidar tarana?
DG
Looks like the kernel of the idea was already present, but Ravi
Shankar did apply his own touch to it. From the sawf archives : 'A
relatively recent entrant into the Hindustani catalogue, this melody
was popularized by Ravi Shankar. He seized upon the idea after hearing
a demonstration of an allied theme by Prof. B.R. Deodhar.'

You don't mean the Ahir Bhairav/Bageshree LP, right?

Real published LP or the only the tailor made LP(cd) cover by some
group ? AFAIK, AK's Natbhairav has only the vilambit, no drut or
madhyalay tarana/bandish. Even some of his followers sing natbhairav
in vilambit & continue with charukeshi in drut. However will be happy
to know the catalogue number of LP & existence of any drut bandish/
tarana in Natbhairav by AK.
I don't remember exactly, but guess that JC's website contains a
discography with the details of AK Nat Bhairav. The disc is with
Sharbari Roychoudhury in Santiniketan, but it is beyond me to get it
from there.
Partha
Notwithstanding the cover designs they've uploaded, there is good
reason to believe the Nat Bhairav has not been released commercially.
One, no other catalogue has ever listed it. And two, the putative
recording label that's supposed to have released it, "Machh
Productions" or whatever it's called, does not seem to exist outside
of JC's site, at least I haven't come across any mention of it. Even
the name sounds er, fishy to me for more than one reason.
It is likely that the recording in possession of Sh Roychoudhury is
commercially unreleased.
Abhik
I've got hold of a 47 minutes Nat Bhairav by AK, followed by Ahir
Bhairav, and then Lalit, courtesy SRC.
Indeed, here it is: http://graphics.stanford.edu/~sidch/AmirKhan-NatBhairav.mp3
. Will be removed from server in a couple of days, get it while you
can.

Cant find words to thank you...

No Nat Bhairav drut as far as I can tell. As Parthapratim mentions, he
goes directly into Ahir Bhairav (Piya parveen, 16:31) and then to
Lalit (Tarpat hoon jaise jal bin meen, 26:21). After Lalit he starts
Todi (Man ke panchhi) but I don't have the recording of that song
beyond the first few seconds. I suspect SRC had a 90 minute tape which
ran out at this point, either during the original rec or during
transfer.
Here are tracks 2 and 3:

http://graphics.stanford.edu/~sidch/AmirKhan-Lalit.mp3
There is the minor possibility that the tracks are not all from the
same concert, but the transitions appear to be pretty seamless.
I'm afraid I don't know when and where this was recorded.
S
Nat Bhairav, Ahir Bhairav, and Lalat are from the same concert. Before
the second piece he says "Isi drama ka doosra prakar" Bombay 1973.
Dunno about the Todi. This was recorded on a spool recorder, the usual
hum of the semi-pro spool machines is there, or was at some point of
the distribution chain transmitted from such a machine.
Thanks for the concert info! I'm pretty sure he says
"Bhairav" (pronounced Bhairo), not "drama", though. It sounds like:
"Usi (?) Bhairav ka doosra pratha/prakar hai"
Sharper ears please weigh in :). Also, if indeed the first word is
"usi", what does "usi" refer to? The way I understand it is that he's
saying both NB and AB are variants of Bhairav.
S
To my ears, he is saying (quite clearly): "isii bhairav kaa duusaraa
prakaar".
Thank you for uploading these gems!
Warm regards,
Abhay
Thanks a lot for sharing this amazing concert.

Yes you are right. After cleaning up the recording a bit, his words
are clearly audible now. "Isi Bhairon ka doosra Prakar"
Thanks anyway.
Thanks for the recordings. They are awesome. He clearly says "Isi
Bhairav ka dusaraa prakaar".
what do you use to effectively clean the concert recordings? I have
been using a software, but that removes some of the lower frequencies
of human voice along with the hum.
Regards,
RP
Usually I use Audition 1.5, sometimes SoundForge. The trick lies in
not depending on the preset filter parameters, it is compulsory to
find the exact noise region, case to case, and still there are some
noise that fall within the human voice range, or sarangi range, better
to leave them as it is. If you are very lucky then you will find some
pre-roll/post-roll region where only the ground noise is there, mark
that noise and try cleaning up. However, concert recordings will never
reach the studio recording quality, nor is that desirable in most
cases.
