While driving to work this morning I was listening "Todi" by Shalmalee
Joshi. I purchased this CD from legendarymusic (a Mumbai based site -
I guess it is owned by N. Rajam). I really liked her singing style.
It's a very balanced blend of Gwalior, Agra & Jaipur. Shee looks like
a very promising singer. It's surprising that I never saw her name
mentioned anywhwere. CD cover says she learnt/learning from Madhuri
Joshi, Padma Talwalkar, Ratanakar Pai and others. If you get a chance
do listen to her. I was very impressed with her singing. Her layakari,
bol-tans etc. were really good. I will be listening to her Bihagada &
Bhajan on my way home. I thought like sharing this with you all. If
anyone of you knows about any other recordings of hers, please let me
know. I purchased this CD for Bihagada and I'm glad I did. I can post
a clip if anyone wants to listen.

Thanks.

I shall thank you for the same.

Ahem. I don't think that this is enough excuse to ask Akash to
compromise the copyright and distribute it free. Here is how you can
buy it if you really want to:

Go to http://www.legendarylegacy.com/simple_search.php

search for "shalmalee"

Choose CD or tape

buy online as usual

In case of any problem, contact them. Contact details here:

Legacy, or Kala Rasik Sangam.

As promised in my earlier post, uploading Todi & Bihagada by Shalmalee
Joshi. These are just excerpts of the original recording. I have
edited it so you can get an overall feel of her singing. I have kept
the Alap untouched - but the vilambit, madhyalaya and drut has been
severely edited and hence you may find that tala is not syncronized
at many places. So, don't butcher the singer for that :-)

In the original recording, she sang Todi for 30:29 min & Bihagada for
20:55 min. There is a Bhajan (12:25 min) too. Accompanists are
Vishwanath & Seema Shirodkar.

Here is the link to downlaod the clips:

I tried to download the clip on my FLASH drive. It has disabled my FLASH
drive. I cannot access any file stored on this flash drive. Any
suggestions? ....................Balwant Dixit

It's a 31.8MB file. I could download it without any problem on my work
PC and extract both the MP3's. How big is your FLASH drive? Try
downloading on your PC.
Hope this helps.

Hm. I heard Shalmalee Joshi many years ago and thought she had
promise. But she seems to have gone the way of so many youngsters -
all tayyari and to hell with music. May be it didn't download on a
flash drive because she is on a flashy overdrive herself.

Really!!! I really liked her singing......there in no doubt that her
singing shows tayyari, but along with that she has her thoughts. I
could see lot of Padma Talwalkar's influence (swar lagav's etc) but
still she has put in her thoughts while presenting these ragas. This
is the only recording/performance I ever heard, so I can just comment
about this. I certainly would put her much higher on the list among
the current crop!!!!
Can you please eloborate.
Thanks.
