can someone give me the arohanam and avorahanam of the raag Gara ?
Thank you.
Briefly -
Raga Gara (gArA) is a kshudra-prakriti rAga. The Aroha-avaroha
scarcely reveals its nature. Jha-sahab gives it as (M=shuddha):
S G M P G M D N S"::S" n D P M G R g R S n' D', n' S
The chief lakshaNA lies in the following sentence:
M G R g R S R N' S n' D'
(the nyAsa on mandra dhaivat in this manner is characteristic)
A sample chalan is:
S R N' S n' D', D' n' S G, M G R g R S D' n' G
M G M n D P M G M D N S", S" N D P M G, M G R g R S
As a kshudra-prakriti rAga, license is often taken with the
basic prayogas - both through creative phrasing and through
the introduction of vivAdi swaras ("Mishra Gara"). It is an
exceedingly melodious ("karNapriya," as Jha-sahab puts it) rAga.
To see how an AvirbhAva of Gara obtains from Khamaj, see
Jha-sahab's clip (Khamajspeak) in "In the Khamaj Orchard."
Now for a beautiful sample of Yeshwantrai Purohit, a promising
disciple of Omkarnath Thakur and a life cut short:
