Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar
Ulhas Kashalkar, has earned at a relatively young age, wide
recognition all over India and abroad as one of the premier
vocalists representing the Gwalior gharana of Khyal singing.
Ulhas was initiated to music by his illustrious father, Shri N.
D. Kashalkar, who was a well known vocalist and a
musicologist. Subsequently he came under the influence of
Pandit Ram Marathe, who not only was a well known
classical vocalist but also a highly acclaimed Marathi stage
performer. But it was Gayanacharya Late Pandit
Gajananbua Joshi who was really responsible for the development of Ulhas
as a thoughtful vocal
performer with a blend of Gwalior, Agra and Jaipur gharanas, the three
of the best known
traditions of Khyal singing.
Gifted with a melodious and superbly flexible voice, Shri Kashalkar's
vocal music appeals to the
laymen and to the connoisseurs alike. He is recognized by the stalwarts
for his repertoir of ragas
and compositions as well as his skilful exposition of a rag. As a
performer, Ulhas is outstanding
in his command over the rhythmic structure (i.e. Iayakari), the fluency
and the esthetics with
which he renders intricate taans (musical phrases) during a concert.
Ulhas is currently associated with the Sangeet Research Academy of
Calcutta as a Senior
Professor. He also is a top grade performer on the All India Radio and
has presented concerts
in the National Program Series of AIR. He has a number of recordings to
his credit and he had
very successful concert tours of U.S.A. and Canada in 1993 and 1995.
