This rAga has been discussed here a few times. Nominally it
belongs to the Khamaj thAT and the following chalan captures
its essence:
G M P (S")n S" (P)D, P, D M P G M R n' S
G M P S", P n S" (P)D, P
Gavati is also known as Bheem in some quarters where
to the above swaroopa is added a vivAdi komal gandhAr
in the tAr saptaka only. Note that this Bheem is not
the same as that of the Kafi thAT.
For more details on Bheem/Gavati see Ramrang's Abhinava
Geetanjali Volume 2.
Bade Ghulam Ali Khan is said to have taught Gavati to
the great Carnatic vocalist G.N. Balasubramaniam (who
in turn taught BGAK Raga Andolika (I think)). The
druta bandish in this BGAK recording ("pAra na pAyo")
is mentioned in Ramrang's essay.

Jitendra Abhisheki has a commercially available
recording in which he sings two compositions of
Ramrang, the vilambit "aasa lagi tumhare charana
ki" and the druta cheez "humari pAra karo Sai" -

There's a superb old recording of Nazakat Ali-Salamat
Ali. Vilayat Khan too has a recording that may some
day win a Grammy.
Warm regards,

ps: The Gavati entry will soon be planted in the
Khamaj Orchard on Sawf. Also watch out for revised
and augmented versions of the first 7-8 features
there in the coming days.

This is at: http://www.dovesong.com/MP3/MP3_India_pentatonic.asp.
Also, Raga records has published Nikhil Banerjee'e Gawoti (or Gavati or
Gavti). But personally I have always liked Ali brothers' dhan dhan bhAg and
Angan Aao balamA most.

Thanks for the info.
How does Gawati compare with Kalawati?
Can you analyze Marathi gem: "de malA de chandrike"?

Gavti does not have many similarities with Kalavati or Janasammohini.
In addition to having a prominant M in Gavti (which is varjya in both
Kalavati and Janasammohini), the uttarang chalan G M P n S (P) D P is
very unique and is not used in Kalavati/Janasammohini.
