>> Putrika. There is a composition of Muthiyya Bagavathar "Raja Raja Radhike -
Raja Kale Sharadhe". Since Ma and Pa are absent (and no other swaras require
the use of the lips in their pronounciation ) this raga is also called
"Niroshtya" by some people. In reality, "Niroshta" ragas refer to all the
ragas which do not have "ohshtya" swaras. Interestingly, the song I mentioned
earlier is also "Niroshtya". All the 32 ragas with arohanam/ avarohanam
S R G D N S have nice names - I can't recollect them now - I am sure you
can find it in any raga kosha.
Hope this helps.

ps (Chandramouli): I suppose he means 36 ragas and not 32.
NIROSHTA
Niroshta means having no lips. Persons who are unable to use their
lips cannot utter the letters Ma and Pa. A Niroshta raga is one in which
swaras Ma and Pa are both omitted. This is against the rules regarding
construction of ragas, but it is meant for the convenience of the
lipless.
(WS note: I just *love* that phrase "meant for the convenience of the
lipless," don't you? I'm sure Subbha Rao had a quiet chuckle at the time)
He goes on to cite the Hindustani raga Adbhut Kalyan (S R G D N S, S N
D G R S -- all shuddha swaras) as an example. I have one recording
of Fariduddin Dagar singing this raga. Any others?

One additional point about muttayya bhAgavatar's composition "rAja rAja
rAdhitE": This composition not only avoids svarAs ma and pa, being in the
rAga nirOSTa, it also avoids all the akSrAs pa, pha, ba, bha and ma in
sAhityam. Obviously in the ciTTasvaram pa and ma are avoided. Therefore in
singing this composition one never has to close the lips. My take on this
not that it is for the "lipless"; rather I think the implication is that -
while I sing in praise of you I shall not close my mouth!
