Hello:
I was wondering if anyone could recommend good microphones for miking my
tablas.

Thank you,
Blair

If budget is an issue: Beyer M 201, excellent dynamic mic, hypercardioid
If budget is not so much of an issue: AKG C 414. Period. My absolute favourite, also for
live sound...

I've been experimenting recently with the AKG C418, clip on mics that
can be attached to the strap and hover just above the tabla skin. so
far this is the best mic I've come across for miking the tabla in
those hard to mic places...(i.e with western instruments like a drum
kit, in which tabla(especially bayan) typically gets drowned out).
Expensive, but well worth it if you need good, LOUD, sound. excellent
sound quality. Obviously you would need two of these.

Where do you put thet so it doesn't disturb the player... I imagine when someone is paying
"Dheredhere" with the full hand, he might hit the mic.. Should be easier on the bayan, but
stil...

Good Question....the mic needs to be placed to the right of the pinky
finger on the dayan(tabla). One still needs to be careful when playing
a full handed DhereDhere with this mic. It requires a slight
adjustment and its one of the compromises of using the mic. I also
tend to turn the tabla frequently when playing, which also is a
problem when using this mic, as the position of the mic changes as the
tabla is turned when trying to find a good kinar spot. On the bayan
the mic sounds better when placed towards the left side of the drum,
closer to the wrist then the fingers. This way all of the closed
sounds (Ke, Ka) don't sound so loud. Even with the drawbacks this is
the best solution I've come across in the "hard-to-mic" tabla
situations. I don't use and wouldn't recomend using these mics when
playing classical music as there is no point. Nonetheless if you don't
want to deal with being drowned out or getting feedback this is the
way to go. I've tried other mics and even tablas with mics
inside...this is the best I've seen and tried thus far.

Whats the deal with the AKG C414??

Yeah, right... Like the good ol' Ambassador is THE best car...
Come on... It may be a fairly good tabla mic for the stage (Beyer M201
is far better, though), but otherwise, forget it. Doesn't have that much
of fine detail.

Unfortunately, all that many musicians know is this and the 58, and they
ask for it even for Santur or Sitar, even if you have far better gear.
