M. Krishnarao is known to have set Vande Mataram to multiple tunes in his
herculean effort to get it accepted as the national anthem of India. But the
possibility that the tune played by AIR might also be his is suggested by
this line in a profile of M. Krishnarao in the Marathi book "Swarasauhaarda"
by the usually reliable Prabhakar Jathaar.

"'vande maataram'chi prachalit lokapriya CHaal maastaraanchiCH aahe"

(The prevalent, popular tune of Vande Mataram is M. Krishnarao's)

He doesn't say anything more that might remove all doubt.

I will forward this message to Milind Sabnis, who has written a book
on Vande Mataram in Marathi. The book is available in Hindi and
English also.

I think the tune is unlikely to be Master Krishnarao's because Sabnis,
Chandvankar and SIRC folks are in the thick of Master Krishnarao
and Prabhakar Jathar territory. Since Sabnis included Ravi Shankar
and Jnan Babu Ghosh among the likely composers and did not
mention 'maastar', I am quite confident he must have explored that
angle before ruling Master out. If I hear anything to the contrary,
I will post it here.

I have tried to tap some sources to find Vijay Raghav Rao's contact
details but no luck so far. If anybody can help, please get in touch
with me. He might know who had composed the popular tune
of Vande Mataram.

She is wrong about one thing. The Anand Math rendition does not have all
six verses of the song. It has only two verses.

I can confirm that the tune in Raga Des played
every morning on AIR was not composed by Ravi Shankar.
Source: the man himself.

I had started a thread (in the not too distant past) to try to find
out who had composed the AIR tune for Vande Mataram. Ajay
Nerurkar had made a post and produced some data which
suggests that the tune was not composed by Ravi Shankar.
That time RS was in Europe and I had requested a friend, who
has interacted with him before, to contact him when possible
about this topic. After that, the issue was kind of relegated but it
has not been forgotten. It would be great if we can hear direct
from RS about it.

I had tried, an year or two ago, to contact Jnan Babu's (foster) son
through a mutual friend. I have forgotten the exact details but I think
the friend did talk to the son and I came away with the impression
that most probably the late Jnan Babu did not compose it.

Pannalal Ghosh's name was also mentioned as a potential
candidate and I had requested a friend to ask Anil Biswas
about it. I haven't got in touch with this friend after that.

As already indicated, Vijay Raghav Rao (the flute player), who has
settled in the US, is also a potential source of infomation. But I
have not been able to trace him.

Obiter Dicta :

One sentence in the Indian Express URL quoted above makes
one's heart sink.
"Later, Ravi Shankar created the compact one-stanza version for
All India Radio, and Lata Mangeshkar gave it voice in the film
Anandmath." For fuck's sake, can't that sentence be better
constructed? Lata gave voice to 'it' in Anandmath, it being Hemant
Kumar's tune. Lata did not sing Ravi Shankar's compact version
in the same film and the sentence comes dangerously close to
suggesting that she did.

I do have some comments to make about A R Rahman's Vande
Mataram but since I have sworn that I won't use bad words for
the whole of this month and intend to carry out my honest intentions,
I am postponing my verdict to a later date. Stay tuned.

Here is the Vande Mataram discography. It was forwarded to me
by Suresh Chandvankar last month. I had been planning to post
it for some time. If it is felt that it could have been posted with
better formatting, would somekindbody take pains to format it
and then repost it in the same thread now or maybe even a bit later.

I have discovered some more information about Vande Mataram
floating around with me. This information, yet again, is courtsey
Suresh Chandvankar of SIRC, Mumbai.

- dn

-----------------------------------------------

Some interesting events before the song became popular nationwide -

- Vande Mataram song - composed by Pujjyosri Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in
1875. Now it is established that the date was 7th November 1875. As per
Hindu calendar

- Sj.Jadunath Bhattacharya was asked to set tune to this song just after it
was composed.

- Sj.Gopal Chandra Dhar of Hooghly District, Bengal sung it in Raga Desh
Malhar in 1876.

- The song was included in his novel 'Anandmath' by the composer and was
printed out in 1882.

- In 1885, Prativa Devi, niece of Rabindranath Tagore, made a swar lipi
(notation) of the song which was published in 'BALAK' magazine.

- Sung in National Congress in 1896, at Beadon Square, Calcutta by
Rabindranath Tagore and the song was declared to be recognized as the
National song. Piano accompaniment with the song was given by Jyotindranath
Tagore.

- Sj.Dakhina Charan Sen, a specialist in western tunes, sung the song in
Calcutta Congress in 1901.

Thanks for kindly forwarding the complete discography from Dr.
Chandvankar!

I am missing at least one disk. The one sung by Dr. Baalaantrapu
Rajanikanta Rao (popularly knows as RAJANI) and P. Bhanumati. On the
other side of the disk you find #pasiDi merungula taLataLalu# (a song
praising the Telugu land). Both the songs were first broadcast on the
eve of AIR-Vijayawada's inaguration in 1948 and released on disk in the
same year.

[Incidentally the above songs are the only 2 non-film songs recorded by
Bhanumati, if you exclude her purandaradaasa keertana-s for Sangeeta
lable.]

My memory may be playing tricks, but isn't there a version recorded by
Ms. K. aSwatthamma, that legendary singer and stage artist from
Karnataka? Or is it jana gaNa mana....?

Regards,
Sreenivas
