i know that ustad sultan khan sang the song "albela sajan aayo ri" for
HDDCS, but this query is more related to the 50's/60's film music world.
does anyone know which classical musicians were most active in the film
world? i believe ustad rais khan (sitar) was at one point very closely
associated with composer madan mohan, and i've heard that pt. shivkumar
sharma, pt. hariprasad chaurasia, and pt. ram narayan played often with
o.p. nayyar (every time i hear an enchanting sarangi piece in a nayyar
tune, i wonder if it's pandit ram narayan). can anyone
verify/correct/add other examples?
on a similar note, does anyone know if ustad nizamuddin khan (tabla)
has played with the composer taj ahmed khan? there are some gazal
recordings of mohd. rafi in his mid to late years (music composed by
t.a. khan), where i'm almost sure, by the thekas and tabla/dugga
balance, etc. that it's ustad n.k. on tabla. can anyone verify?

I am sure of pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia's association with OPN.In fact
OPN threw out Pt.hpc as he turned late for a recording.
I might be adding people that were not very active. In
addition to the two movies that Ustad Ali Akbar Khan MDed, he was
closely associated with SJ for a couple of movies.Seema is the only
name that I can recall now.I am not sure if Panna Lal Ghosh was
associated with any MD other than Anil Biswas.(They were co-MD's for
Basant). Ustad Vilayat Khan's name also comes to mind.BTW what are the
movies that Pandit Ravi Shanker MDed besides Anuradha and Godaan?
Srinivas.
Hariprasad Chaurasia has played for Illayaraja in some movies. I had
read that he played for the Telugu movie 'Jagadekha Veerudu, Athiloka
Sundari'. Chaurasia has also collaborated with Illayaraja for the
album 'Nothing but the Wind'.
Keeping down South, the violonist V.V.Subramaniam has also played for
Illayaraja. One of the movies he is supposed to have played is
'Poonthottam'. There is a good RithiGowla song in this movie which has
some interesting violin interludes. Wonder if they were played by VVS.
Kadri Gopalnath had collobrated with ARR for the movie 'Duet'. I guess
they worked together in one more movie.
Going back in time, Karukurichi Arunachalam played for Subbaiyya Naidu,
for the film 'Konjum Salangai'. The song 'Singara velane devaa' is a
legend now. Sethuram and Ponnuswamy played for K V Mahadevan in the film
'Thillana Mohanambal'. This is one one of the most popular Tamil movies.
I know that a famous Nadaswaram duo played for the movie 'Koil Pura'.
The MD was Illayaraja. The movie was a flop but had some oustanding songs.
One of them was a Gowlai song by Jesudas, 'vedam nee, iniya naadam nee'.
Veenai Gayathri had mentioned in an interview that she had played for some
movies. I dont know which movies she played for. Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan has
composed and played in some movies. Offhand, I can recall the movie 'Todi
Raagam'. I think he has composed for some Devar Films movies.

Thanks for an informative post, esp. from southern perspective. Special thanks
for mentioning the song from "Thillana Mohanambal" which brought a lot of fame
to S. Janaki and made her a legend.
I just would like to three more names; all were famous *vaiNikaa-s* S.
Balachandar, Emani Sankara Sastry and Chitti Babu. First 2 were long associated
with films; one with AVM studios and the other with Gemni. These two composed
music for films and also played. Balachandar, in fact, also acted in a couple
of films.
Oh, don't forget to add the name of M.S. Gopala Krishnan. Now, don't ask me
what instrument did he play :-). I understand that he was associated with many
Tamil films, whose detailes I, unfortunately, don't have off-hand. I can only
think of his lengthy violin solo bits in B.N. Reddy's #puujaaphalam# (1964).
There are certainly more from the south.

Ustad Vilayat Khan's involvement with film music and music directors is
very minimal. What little involvement he had was more with the so-called
"art films", such as by Satyajit Ray's "The Music Room". Most of the work
was actually done by his brother Imrat Khan in these films of the
1950's and 1960's, as he had much more of a sense and interest in this
kind of music. In fact, Imrat Khan's early music career was in the Bombay
film industry where he not only composed for films but also sang the
lyrics, e.g. in the film "Station Platform". He also collaborated
with H. Khan Mastana.
Ustad Bismillah Khan played Shehnai in Goonj Uthi
Shehnai.
Anant
Bismillah Khan with Vasant Desai in
Goonj Uthi Shehenai. I believe Ram
Narayan also has worked with Vasant Desai,
although the specifics escape me at
the moment.

Thanks, Suresh, for a detailed account of Karnatak classical
instrumentalists in films.

Are these soundtracks available on cassetttes/CDs? Or at least the
songs in some compilations? And what is Krukuichi's instument?

Kunnakudi has a cassette release where he plays on violin Kannada film
hits sung by Rajkumar. It suprised me somewhat. Reputed classical artists
have occasionally played a particular film hit of theirs in concerts, but a
whole cassette like this?
Ashok
Srinivas.
Kabuliwala(Bengali) - 1956
Tero nadir pare(Bengali) - 1962
Genesis(Hindi) - 1986
The first movie had two Rabindrasangeets.
The story of the second movie was akin to the
Malayalam movie 'Chemeen'.
AFAIR, the last movie did not have any songs.
It was directed by Mrinal Sen.

Actually, Pt. Ravi Shankar scored the music for
the entire Apu trilogy.

Kshudita Pashan(Bengali) was MD-ed by Ali Akbar Khan.
He also MD-ed the Bengali movies Adarsha Hindu
Hotel and Ritwik Ghatak's Ajantrik.

Gandhi had two MD-s: George Fenton and Ravi Shankar

I think you are referring to 'Konjum Salangai'. This song bought lot
of fame to S.Janaki. This song also appears in Telugu. The name of the
film eludes me. (Was it 'Muripinche Muvvalu'?).

I did miss out Balachander. He had a very long association with Tamil Films.
He did direct a few movies too. One such movie, 'Oru Iravu'(?) had no
songs.

I didnt know about this. Would be worth listening to those bits.

'Thillana Mohanambal' is definitely available. I personally think that
'Konjum Salangai' should also be available. If not, you can check out
any compilation of S.Janaki hits. This song should be featured. This is
still considered by many to be her greatest hit.
Karukurichi played the nadaswaram. He is considered to be one of the all-time
greats in Karnatik music. If you get the movie on video, there are some
excellent passages that he plays. I dont know if they are available on the
audio tape.

Not surprising. Kunnakudi does play a lot of film songs. So much so, that
many people nowadays dont consider him as a classical violonist.

The sitarist Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan. Some of the ultra-famous songs his
sitar occurs in are : Jyotikalash chhalake, Rasik balma, Tasveer banaataa
hoon tasveer nahin banati, Jaa re badara bairi jaa, Yeh zindagi usiki hai
and finally Madhuban mein raadhika naache re composed by everyone's favourite
music director, Naushad.
