PS: A question. Is the Bengali 'Basanta Bahar'
related to the Hindi film of the same name?

Reproduced from my post on RMIM on April 24, 2003:
There were quite a few classical music based (Bengali)
movies around the same time period. One hit movie was
Dhuli(1953) with some songs by A. T. Kannan. I have
seen that movie but do not remember any Hindi
songs in it. Juthika Roy sang some songs in it.
Yet another classical music based hit
was 'Basant Bahar' (no relation to the SJ Hindi
movie with the same name) relased around 1955.
This movie had some Hindi songs - I think Sandhya
Mukherjee sang 'baaju ba.ndh khul khul jaaye'
in this movie - not sure though - movie channels
do not show this movie at all. Finally, there
was the Marathi-Bengali bilingual 'Amar Bhupali'
directed by V. Shantaram. I do not know much
about this movie except that it had Manna De's
first song in a Bengali movie. The songs of this
movie are quite rare.
-Prithviraj
Unrelated to this thread, but recently it was mentioned on
the forum that the singer Sandhya Mukherjee was sometimes
referred to as Sandhya Rani Mukherjee. My source of
this bit of info may have misremembered. It could be that
the actress and part-time singer Sandhya Rani's full name
was Sandhya Rani Mukherjee. Sandhya Rani had acted in
the film Sabyasachi (1948). Music was by Robin Chaterjee.
There were two songs in the film by one Sandhya-Rani
Mukherjee. Prithviraj or KP may know more about this film.

From which film/album are the following classical songs, and who are the composers?
1) "Keno gelo paraabose bolo bodhuaa" - Lata Mangeshkar
2) "Baandho jhoolonaa" - Sandhya Mukherjee and a male voice
3) "Chhonde chhonde..." - Haimanti Shukla
Film: Monihar
Music Director: Hemanta Mukherjee
Chhonde Chhonde by Haimanti Shukla was composed by Manabendra
Mukherjee. The composition I believe is based on Raga Hansadhwani
which Manabendra used somewhat frequently when composing. The song was
part of one Haimanti's annual releases of Bengali adhunik...This was
really one of her nice casettes of modern Bengali music.
Yours,
Sandip.
The Marathi 'Amar Bhupali' had some wonderful songs. Was the Bengali version
MD'ed by Vasant Desai too? Were the same tunes used?
Warm regards,
Abhay

Ami Tumi Bhalo Bachhi
makes no difference in terms of enjoyability of Bengali songs
POSSIBLE CORRECTION
=====================
I have a LP, titled: Shopmochan / Tagore's Musical Drama
The artist's info is in Bengali, so can not decipher it. If the song
A1 / kaliyaa.N sa.ng karat
is from this LP, then it is
Non-Film + MD is : Rabindra Nath Tagore
I bought the LP for the song:
Bhulo Na Bhulo Na / Hemant Kumar
= Naina Diwane, Ik Nahin Maane /
AFSAR / S D Burman / Suraiya

Okay, but as you might have noticed, all songs in that
tape are in Hindi.

The Tagore dance drama Shapmochan (which you have LP of),
and the Bengali movie Shapmochan (from which the song in
the tape is) are two entirely different entities. The former
was written and composed by Rabindranath and it is a musical
opera. The latter is a Uttam Kumar-Suchitra Sen movie
released in 1955 with song lyrics by Bimal Chandra Ghosh
and music by Hemant Kumar.
BTW, the first line of the Tagore song is 'se din dujane
dulechhinu bane'. 'Bhulo naa, bhulo naa' is an embellishment
from a line in the middle of the song, perhaps recommended
by the director of the (record) production (Santosh
Sengupta) at the start of the song. The musical notation of the
song made by Rabindranath starts with 'se din...'.
-Prithviraj
Have made appropriate changes for Tagore's Shopmochan
I did not notice that the songs on the tape are in Hindi (some what
odd that Bengali films had songs in Hindi and that too based on
Classical Raags)

Interesting to know that there is such a large occurance of Hindi
songs in Bengali films. What kind of situations are these songs
picturised? Are Bengali films also bilngual to a certain extent?
Also, is there somewhere on the internet where one could buy this
collecton. They seem to be very acquirable!
Cheers

Bengali films are not bilingual. Some non-Bengali
characters did speak Hindi (broken Bengali)
once in a while like Waheeda in 'Abhijan' and
Vyjayanthimala in 'HaTey bajare', but majority
of dialogs are in Bengali.
About the picturization of the songs, there were
some general categories which I am trying to classify
below. 'Songs' refer to the songs contained on
the tape in the subject of this thread.
- guru training shishya, e.g.: the songs from Shapmochan,
'Jay jayanti', 'Surer piyasi' (This movie was based on
the life of K C Dey, IIRC).
- prostitute entertaining clients; e.g: songs from Alor
Pipasa, Antoni Firingee
- hero plays the character of a singer who is performing
on stage/radio/soiree etc.; e.g.: Basant Bahar (AFAIR, in
this movie Basant Chowdhury played the role of a radio singer)
- musical competition; e.g.: Dhooli - the song given in
the tape is that of the loser in a competition (in the movie)
sung by Pratima Banerjee and picturized on Mala Sinha. The
winning song was sung by Juthika Roy and picturized on
Suchitra Sen.
- other.; e.g.: Kshudita Pashan(1961) has a very interesting
picturization. It is the same story as Lekin. While
the hero is wandering through the ruins of the palace,
it starts raining and the song given in the tape fades in,
After about a minute or so, suddenly there is a clap of
thunder and the classical song fades out and mingles into
a Rabindrasangeet ('shrabaner gaganer gaay bidyut chamakiya
jaay' - the hero's feelings of the rains) which again mingles
back into the classical song after one antara. I thought it
was a very apt way of showing the conflict between reality
and imagination in the story. IIRC, the picturization shows
the hero (Soumitra) moving through halls and corridors,
with curtains flying, in search of the singers.
Another fact that I found quite unique was for the Bengali
movie 'Mahaprasthaner pathe' (Hindi version 'Yatrik') - all
its songs were in Hindi or Sanskrit. The story is a travelogue
of pilgirms to religious sites in the Himalayas.
-Prithviraj
As I had mentioned, the songs in 'Sabyasachi' (old)
were sung by Sandhya Rani, not Sandhya Mukherjee.
I dont know of either Sandhya Rani or Sandhya Mukherjee
ever being called 'Sandhya Rani Mukherjee'.
Samik
Now you know. Hindi Film Geet Kosh's entry for 'Sabyasachi'
has mentioned her as Sandhya-rani Mukherjee. It is possible
that the hfgk's source (Film Booklets and documents with
or by the censor board or HMV or Production companies
are the usual sources) made an error in noting down her name.

Yes, the MD was Vasant Desai. I haven't heard any
of the Bengali movie's songs (and never searched for them either).
In the Bengali Lata Geet Kosh, I saw that there were 5 songs
in this movie by Lata with lyrics by Gauriprasanna Majumdar.
One of the songs is titled "ghanashyama sundara" by Probodh(Manna)
Dey and Lata - which I guess would be the Bengali version of
the famous Marathi duet from this movie. Since this movie was
merely dubbed into Bengali, I suspect the tunes might have been
retained entirely from the Marathi version.

My dear Sudhir-ji,
I know of your interest in people's names (e.g. the
thread on Raja Mehdi Ali Khan !), but changing
"Dasgupta" to "Sengupta" is a tad too much !

There is this double cassette of Lata-bai which HMV has released with
the first 3 songs from the Bengali 'Amar Bhupali' I think the same
tunes were used as the movie was only dubbed in Bengali. (check:
http://www.ultraindia.com/movies/filmography/filmography.php?choice=1&na=AMAR%20BHUPALI&set=set)
One song was obviously 'ghanshyam sundara'. The other 2 songs are
composed in yaman kalyan ('tomar piritey'- (I may be wrong with the
words here))and a very sprightly bhairavi ('shukhey maatey chith').
This cassette also has a Lata number in Hindi. I think the movie is
'Monihaar' with music by Hemanta Mukherjee.
I have seen this cassette in the Bengali section of the Mumbai shop
Rythm House. All the songs in this cassette are quite rare.
Regards-Archisman.
tomar pritey = tujhyaa preeteeche duHkh malaa
(tujhase preet yeh mera gham ban chuka hai)
shukhey maatey chith : does it mean something like
'teri meri preet'? Amar Bhoopali's Marathi version had
a sprightly song by Lata : 'tuhjii maajhii priit, ekadaa kadhii'
The URL quoted above says :
"The film entered the International film festival held at
kans (sic) in the year 1952." Cannesn't the people
responsible for the URL get a few, simple things right?
