have you seen raga "bhavani" ?

a year back, I was listening to a cassette of
Dr. Balamurali Krishna, one of the pieces of which
was "Jayathi Siva Bhavani.." (raga Bhavani).
I was reminded of this due to some vague reason.. and
now want to know:
1. The name of the cassette, or other particulars
2. Of other pieces in this raga (I vaguely remember
reading somewhere that this is one of the few raga's
that are exceptions to the rule that they must be atleast
five different notes.. Is this right? Anyway, can someone
tell me the arohana, avarohana?)
3. Of people who have sung this raga!

I doubt if people "see" rAgas (unless they are under the
influence of hallucinogens). However:

I am listening to the Sangeetha cassette "6ECDB 195" as I type
this reply. Accompanying bAlamuraLe are V.V.Ravi on violin,
E.M.Panchapakesan on mRdha~gam, and V.Sundaram on Gatam.
(2) Does BavAnE have fewer than 5 notes?
Certainly not. BavAnE is the 44th mAELa rAga in the asampUrNa
mAELa padhDhathe. The _sa~gEtha sampradhAya pradharSenE_ gives
the scale of the rAga as:

The 44th sampUrNa mAELa is BavapreyA. Two kRthes in this rAga
are _SrEkAntha nEyada balAthebala cala-ga~ga lAEdhA vAdhA_ by
thyAgarAja and bAlamuraLe's own _mADhava mAm ava_, the entire

For those interested in relating BavapreyA to other close rAgas,
it is the prathe-maDhyama counterpart of hanumathOdE and the
kISeKe neShAdha counterpart of SuBapanthuvarALe (traces of both
rAgas are detectable in BavapreyA/BavAnE). I won't say what I
think of people who oppose such comparisons even for pedagogical
purposes.
In any case, rAgas with fewer than 5 notes are not only a
possibility, but they have also been performed successfully
(whatever some people might like to think). For more

A (very) loose translation would be:
SevA-BavAnE, victorious, mother of the world, blemishless.
Stream of kindness/pity emotion, riding/having an army of
punished demons. Destroyer of fear-inducing mockeries/jokes,
possessing lustrous, braided hair. Enjoyer of guru-guha,
dispeller of people's fatigue.
I have taken liberties with word inflections (and the translation
is bound to be stilted unless I attempt poetry in English). Some
alternative interpretations are possible (and I don't claim to
have the right ones). The specific sa~skRth words used also have
more meaning than the translations would indicate (for example,
"nera~janE" and "kapardhenE" are appropriate epithets of BavAnE
since "nera~janaH" and "kapardhen" are epithets of Seva).
As to a general algorithm for getting translations to kRthes,
"post to Usenet" is one. However, this algorithm is notoriously
unreliable (after all, why should anyone pay attention to what I
say or trust me). A more robust algorithm is to learn the
languages involved, and purchase good dictionaries (which is what
I did); or look for books on the subject (many are available).
A compromise would be a collective project involving multiple
people on the Net, extended over many years aimed at collecting
compositions, lyrics, notations; verifying them, and making them
accessible online in multiple formats. Some people have
expressed interest in such a project, some are working on the
beginnings of one.

who is the daughter of late Dr. S. Ramanathan. She played the
krithi, "Bhavapriye Bhavani". Bhavani is indeed a janya of Bhavapriya,
the 44th mela raga. The krithi that she played was a composition of Dr.
S. Ramanathan himself.
