The main four strings are tuned as shown below.
The underscore indicates lower octave. Chikari
strings are tuned to upper Sa. There may be
four nonplaying strings next to Chikari strings
depending on the type of Sarod you have. They are
to be tuned according to the raag you are playing.
Usually Ni Sa Sa Ma does fine. And you have sympathetic

Tarab strings to be tuned to the scale of the raag.

Starting from the bottom-most main string (call that 1)
1: Ma
2: Sa
3: Pa
.
4: Sa
.
5: Pa
..
(note, this 5th string Pa is only on sarods of the style as Pt. Buddhadev
Dasgupta. AAK-style sarods are different, I believe...)
Additionally, the top 2 chikari's are tune to SA above main Sa, and if you
have a 3rd chikari, it gets tuned to main SA (again, same caveat about
style).
In the gharana in which I study, Sa on sarod is middle C. This will vary
on instrument style and ghaarana preference from Bb to D...
