Would someone be kind enough to remind me
how to tune a Sarod ?

Many thanks.

In article <5lgp51$35...@elmo.cadvision.com>, rmma...@cadvision.com says...

The main four strings are tuned as shown below.
The underscore indicates lower octave. Chikari
strings are tuned to upper Sa. There may be
four nonplaying strings next to Chikari strings
depending on the type of Sarod you have. They are
to be tuned according to the raag you are playing.
Usually Ni Sa Sa Ma does fine. And you have sympathetic
--
Tarab strings to be tuned to the scale of the raag.

Hope this helps.

Starting from the bottom-most main string (call that 1)

1: Ma

2: Sa

3: Pa
.

4: Sa
.

5: Pa
..

(note, this 5th string Pa is only on sarods of the style as Pt. Buddhadev
Dasgupta. AAK-style sarods are different, I believe...)

Additionally, the top 2 chikari's are tune to SA above main Sa, and if you
have a 3rd chikari, it gets tuned to main SA (again, same caveat about
style).

In the gharana in which I study, Sa on sarod is middle C. This will vary
on instrument style and ghaarana preference from Bb to D...

The Sarod can be tuned in many ways. Matt here told you of one!!! Now,
tuning depends on what you intend to play on what ocassion. Usually, we
tune the sarod as follows. In the AAK style sarod, there are four main
strings which are tuned to MA, SA, PA (lower octave), and SA(lower). In
the Afghan Rababiya Gharanas of Shahjahanpur and Bangesh, the sarod has
an additional Pancham (PA...lower) string after the SA(.) which is rarely
played. The chikaris are tuned to SA (Guess you all know that). By the
way, a chikari is a high pithed rythm/drone string. the four DRONE on
"Jhankar" strings lying between the main and the chikari strings are
tuned according to the raga. For the Bilawal scale, we tune it as NI, RE,
GA, and SA (in order moving from Main strings towards chikaris, location
wise). For Bhairav, it is NI, re, GA, SA. (the l/case indicates flat or
komal swaras). For Kafi thaat, it is ni, RE, ga, SA. and for Marwa thaat
is is DHA, re GA, SA or NI, re, GA, SA. So, if you wanna know some
innovative techniques of sarod tuning devi -sed by Brij Narayan and
myself, please feel free to write, all of you! Thank You! this is my
first USENET Post. The author is a sixteen year old performer of the
sarod, and a student of Pt. Brij Narayan of the maihar gharana.
