I was wondering if Dr. Balamurali Krishna has the following tyagaraja
kritis to his credit
1) Samajavaragamana.
2) brocheva yavarura.
3) vasudevani vedalina

If anyone has a list of all tyagaraja kritis sung by Dr. Balamurali Krishna
please post it on the net. I have a lot of the kritis sung by him but
am far from having all of them. I would very much appreciate it if
anyone of you would post the information.

If you are referring to the Kamas krithi it is not by Thyagaraja. The
composer is Mysore Vasudevachar.
If you are referring to the Sriranjani krithi it is Brochevarevare.

Besides I don't understand what you mean by having krithis to his "credit"-I
don't see anything creditable in knowing or rendering these rather popular
songs. Ofcourse if Balamurali has rendered one of them recently there is a
lot to his "credit" in that he was humble enough to render a composition by
someone other than himself!

Maybe you should listen to Thyagaraja krithis in TAMIL sung by Balamurali. I
am serious. After his fight with NTR Balamurali was on a major project of
translating all the Thyagaraja krithis to Tamil......

Yes I guess this what I am referring to.

I want a list of all the tyagaraja kritis sung by DR BMK and I
think, he deserves a lot of credit because each kriti he sings,
it is from his heart and sings in a manner that even common
people can understand the meaning of it.
This post of mine was not for being flamed at. It was just
for some information I wanted. If you feel that its not worth it
then you don't have to post anything

It would be far more desirable, however, if any responses were emailed, to Anamika,
and then she was to compile them and post them to the net, that way I won't
have to read a thousand lists to get to the complete one.

I am also a huge Balamurali fan, and his Thillanas CD is a must have!

There is a CD available which has some songs that Balamurali has
translated. From the jacket, I figured that he has used the same raga
that Thyagaraja used in the original Telegu version. This CD had about
7-8 songs on it. I did not buy the CD though, and so can not provide
more information.

On a (un) related topic, I am curious to know how Balamurali Krishna
pronounces Tamil verses.
Being a telugu speakng person, I have observed that some of the
telugu verses are not correctly pronounced by singers of other
languages. (I do remember a thread on this topic!!)

Please note that I do not intend to start any flame wars!!
This is just a question out of curiousity ..

I enjoy listening to tamil compositions but as I do not understand
the words, I cannot say if they are pronounced properly ..

Thank you very much ..

I think he does an excellent job- I am not a great fan of his music, but
his Tamil pronunciation sounds very authentic, perhaps much better than many
"Tamil" singers.

Many of the vocalists who sing Tamil songs (including M.S) tend to
"Sanskritize" a lot of words-for example, introducing "Sha" instead of
"Cha". The same vocalists also go the other way, for example, introducing
"Ka" instead of "Ha"-a distinct Tamil influence. Not many musicians
have a passion for the language as much as the music, so such compromises
can probably be expected.

Balamurali has perfect Tamil diction. In his heydays in the sixties and
early seventies (IMHO) he was best known among other things, for his
wonderful voice, diction in all the languages that he sang kritis in
and his stress of melody and amplitude modulation as a function of the
emotion of the specific songs and lines within songs.

BMK has also composed several Tamil kritis (Varugga, Varuga in
Panthuvarali is a popular one). However,I have heard that many of the
lyrics were actually written by Ms. Abhyambika. Any insight in to this,
anyone?

An Aside: I know you did not ask this, but S.P.Balasubramanium is
another Telugu person who has perfect Tamil diction.

I have heard that the Tamil translation of Tyagaraja
krithis is in fact due to his wife Smt. Abhayambika.
Won't be surprising if some of the songs sung by him
are also due to her.

Balamurali mentioned in an interview to the Sruti magazine a long
while ago that he has taken the help of a few people in creating
the lyrics for his Tamil kritis. I don't believe that he mentioned
Ms. Abhayambika or anyone else specifically, however.
