I need some help from learned folks:
Is the raga called "Rasika ranjani" diffenent from "Purya Kalyani"?
What is the raga with Aarog: Sa Ri Ga Pa Da Sa
Avarog: Sa da Pa Ga Ri Sa from the mela Gamanasrama ?
I am trying to classify tamil film songs according to ragas. If you have
such interests,
Which of the above ragas is the following songs based on?
1) Neelakuyile Unnodu naan (Magudi)
2) Amude tamizhe azhagiya kodiye ()
Thanks
Subu

Q.1 Rasika Ranjani and Purvi Kalyani.
A small matter of nomenclature. The Gamanasrama janya
raga, on which "Meenakshi Memudam Dehi" -- a Muthuswamy
Dikshithar kriti is based, is variously known as Puri Kalyani,
Purvi Kalyai and Purya Kalyani.
Rasika Ranjani is a janya of Chakravaham.
Rasika Ranjani: s r1 g3 p d2 S; S d2 p g3 r1 s
Purvi Kalyani: s r1 g3 m2 p d2 S; S n3 d2 p m2 g3 r1 s
Purvi Kalyani is an ancient raga and has a number of
prayogas that also allow a Nishada in the Arohana. But it
certainly cannot be even closely related to Rasika Ranjani since
the latter is Madhyama-Nishada varja.

Q.2 What is the janya raga.
This is a very vexing problem. Given just the Arohana and
Avarohana, it is very difficult to classify a raga as being a
janya of a particular melakarta. The specified scale could be
derived from 4 different melakartas - Chakravaham, Suryakantham,
Ramapriya and Gamanasrama.
A very widely applied musicological rule is not to place
a raga as a janya of a prati madhyama melakarta unless it has a
prati Madhyama swara in its scale. Hence Chakravaham or
Suryakantham is a more appropriate janaka mela for this raga.
The following ragas have the required Arohana-Avarohana.
The janaka mela is specified in brackets.
Rasika Ranjani [16]
Varna Rupini [17]

Q.3 What ragas are these songs in.
If I recognize the songs correctly, both were set to
music by Illayaraja. The second song is probably from the film
"Koyil Pura". I too was puzzled by the Carnatic basis for these
songs. My opinion is that the scale used in these songs is
exactly what Subu has been asking about in the above 2 questions.
The touch of Mohanam in the Uttaranga and of Bhauli in the
Poorvanga confirms the scale using a Shudha Rishaba and a
Chatusruti Dhaivata. "Rasika Ranjani" is probably the raga
Illayaraja had in mind while composing the music for these songs.
