Yesterday, I heard a sarangi performance of a raag which was described
as RaagSaugandh. To my young ears (young in ICM-land, otherwise quite
middle-aged ears :-), it sounded exactly like Madhuvanti.

Can someone describe how these raags differ, of if they are completely
unrelated and I need to get my ears examined.

Thanks - Arindam

There are at least two ragas that go by the
name Saugandh/Sugandh. One is a creation
of Allauddin Khan of Maihar. The other is
played by Sabri Khan and his son (Kamal?)
on sarangi. I presume you heard the latter
type of Saugandh. From what I remember
(I have heard only the son's version), it is
grounded in the Carnatic melakarta
Hemavati: S R g m(teevra) P D n. Madhuvanti
employs the shuddha nishad (although some
may occasionally take in the komal nishad
the shuddha nishad is pradhana). The chalan
of Saugandh may, prima facie, sound
Madhuvanti-like on account of the the alpatva
of R and D in Arohi sancharis but the overall
personality and effect projected are quite
different. I recall capturing an abhasa of
both Madhuvanti and Bhimpalasi.

Warm regards,

Sabri Khan plays a long version of this raag on ARC EUCD 1566
a cd which was issued in Britain. I remember Gangubai Hangal after a
concert here in 1985 asking Sabri Khan what this raag was all about. I
still prefer the concert recording I think although that may be very
subjective. Sabri Khan used to play here quite frequently and I do
think that his solo concert recordings are superior to his studio
recordings. I particularly remember an hour long Darbari alap which
still is one of my treasured recordings.

Many thanks, Rajan. The one I heard was indeed a recording of Sabri
Khan.

I also wanted to let you know that your articles on SAWF have been a
huge help in attempts to learn something about hindustani music on my
own. Every time I listen to a new raag, I refer to your notes on it to
help me get a flavour of it, and to help me place it better.

I had a couple of other questions for you:

- I've been trying to identify the raag for Mukesh's wonderful number
from Himalay ki God Mein: Main to ek Khwab hoon, and haven't succeded.
Any swara that can be non-shuddha, is. So, using your convention of
m=teevra madhyam, the swara of the song seem to be S r g m P d n. Can
you help identify the raag? Even if the song doesn't follow any raag,
is there a raag with this set of swaras?

- I'm looking for a teacher to learn hindustani vocal. What should I
look for in a teacher? I understand that I am a relative beginner in
this world, but want to take it up seriously, and wanted someone with a
true understanding of the nature of hindustani music. How can I tell?
Are there some things to look for. I'm in the Delh area (Noida), so
choice shouldn't be a problem.

Many thanks - Arindam

Hi

I am a disciple of Ustad Sabri Khan, was just listening to his Saugandh recording when came across this post. Parikkar Sir you are absolutely right, and I love your raaga's blog too, very helpful.
