One Shirish Joshi, author of a very informative biography of Kumar
Gandharva, has been writing a regular column in Kannada about HCMers
and this week has an interesting story about KG and his Madhuvanti
composition. Vasantrao Deshpande, a great admirer of Kumar Gandharva
sent him a letter with a sthayi

main aavoo tore mandarava
paiyya paran deho mohe manabasiya

May I Come to your abode and have the opportunity to touch your feet,
you who are in my heart.

Kuamr Gandharva promptly replied with the antara

arre mero madhaiyya tora ahe re
kahe dharo charan mero manabasiya

My dear idiot, when I am all yours and you are in my heart why do you
need to touch my feet? Later he set the piece to Madhuvanti and added
to his repertoire. It is included in his Anooparagavilas. Kumar
Gandharva was a stickler for ethical conduct and when he was putting
together the book, sent a polite request to Vasantrao asking for
permission to include it in the book. Those who can read Kannada can
enjoy the entire piece

Vivek: Where did you see the word "idiot"? Not sure if you interpreted
"Madhaiyya" that way. But "Madhaiyya" means "Mathi", or the home.

Beatiful bandish, though.

This is the Bandish he sings there? You sure? I hear "Bairana barakha
ritu aayee" as sthayee, and "Rimjhim rimjhim meha barase" as antara.

The translation is in the Kannada article, may be he doesn't get it
right. He takes the first part maDhe and interprets it same as
"mooDha".

However your "home" fits into the sentence more comfortably .

esnips tells me I must download and install their downloader in order
to download files. Their downloader, however, seems to be only for
Windows. Is there any alternative/workaround for Mac users?

Alternatively, I request Havanur/anyone who has downloaded the file to
please make the file available elsewhere, or to send it to me by email
(aphadnis AT gmail).

Thanks and warm regards,
Abhay

On first death anniversary of Vasantrao. Kumar sang both the
bandishes. Looks like Vasantrao once complained about the lack of
bandishes in Madhuvanti. So Kumar said " Why don't you do it" ( Tu ka
nahi karat )

After composing the Sthai Vasantrao could not complete the Antara and
Kumar composed the Antara.

I will post the clips soon if you like.
