This Raga was apparently a favorite of Pandit Omkarnath Thakur - does anyone
know if this Neelambari is the same as the Carnatic Neelambari? Are any
recordings available?
Sanjeev
No idea about any other recordings, Mr. Ramabhadran. The raag
resembles 'kaafi' quite a bit.
There is this bengali song penned & composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam &
famously rendered by Dhirendra Chandra Mitra which goes: 'neelambari
sharee porey, neel jomunay ke jaaye.....'. The composition could have
been influenced by the raag neelambari.
Regards-Archisman.
Sanjeev,
Your querry brings back my childhood memories. My aunt had a
phonograph, winding type, which we used to borrow and listen to the
few recors that she had. One of them was by Pt. Omkarnath Thakur. It
was Neelambari on one side and Suha-Sugharai on the other. (My
spelling could be wrong) I had absolutely no clue about classical
music at that time, but I still remember the tunes somewhat.
In the same collection, she had Govindrao Tembe on Harmonium, I
remember Natya Geete- "Ugich kaa kaantaa" and "vada jaau kunalaa
sharanaalaa" The collection also had Tarana by Vinayak Patwardhan and
Narayan Vyaas.
Even with no education in classical music and being at a very young
age, that small collection had made a tremendous impact at that time!
However we at that age, had more enjoyment out of Marathi Skits
(Nakkalaa), on 78 rpm records.
cheers,

Thanks all for your responses. Kedar Naphade graciously sent me a sound clip
of the Pt. Omkarnath recording, and as mentioned, it has a decided Kafi
slant, bearing no relation to the Carnatic Neelambari.
Cheers,
Sanjeev
