as an aside : re. ustads and pandits: 'vidushi' is gaining
currency in india in case of outstanding female artists.
e.g. ' vidushi sharan rani'.

I do not know this rAga. It is not part of the traditional
bhairav prakArs or even among the newer varieties that have
evolved in this century that I am aware of. Most likely it
is a new conception or if not then part of specialty
gharAnA repertoire. Whose recording do you have and where
is it available?
Warm regards,

This just in - Raga Bakul Bhairav was conceived and developed
by Sumati Mutatkar (now in her 80s). It is, as the name suggests,
a bhairavAnga raga and a janya of the 14th Karnataka melakartA
Vakulabharanam (hence the qualifier 'Bakul'). It resembles the
already popular rAga Basant Mukhari. Further details shall be
provided when I get a copy of Mutatkar's recording.
Sumati Mutatkar is one of the last surviving links to 'tradition.'
She was primarily S.N. Ratanjankar's student, but has also trained
under a wide range of luminaries such as Vilayat Hussein Khan of
Agra and Mushtaq Hussein Khan of Rampur-Sahaswan.
Warm regards,

ps: The above information on Bakul Bhairav was provided by
Dr. Mutatkar herself, via a friend in New Delhi.
