What is the opinion of cognoscenti about this guy?
His website is http://bharatbalvalli.com/ You can find some of his
audio/video recordings there.

I find him capable, but not creative. Especially, the shuddha dhaivat
vibhas drut bandish seems like a note to note copy of UK.
He has received training from Yashwantbua Joshi.

You have voiced/penned your opinion already; I second that with a
rejoinder that his voice is a little nasal, and I have never heard
anyone being so zealous about his off-key taankaari! Can't really
blame anyone if he copies UK-buwa, because of Himself being a 'perfect
representation' of all the other -buwa(s) of the earlier generation
including Paluskar-buwa. Replace shuddh Dha with komal in any of these
recordings (Vibhas Drut) and you get a poor copy of DVP's
unforgettable 78 RPM vinyl stuff.

Gotcha there, Partha! 78 rpm was shellac, not vinyl. Anyone remember
grinding a piece of broken 78 rpm on a wet stone and applying the
paste as medicine for scorpion sting?

More to the topic, Bharat B is 1% art, 99% marketing. Perhaps we
should start building a list of "don't cares" - artists force
themselves upon us from time to time but we should not waste any time
on. BB can head the list.

Yeap true! But in my case, I have that song on a later vinyl album
(EP) and then on a cassette, and then on a CD, and finally now on my
iPod! Never saw this original 78 disc with mortal eyes.

For the rest of it -- absolutely so!

Capable but not creative sums it up quite well. Nasality is something
that I have grown to overlook with time. Though it can often be due to
improper technique, a lot of it has to do with ones natural timbre. He
does go off-tune esp in the higher registers. That said, I would still
attend his concert. He has potential - now if only he could re-align
that 99% of marketing energy into riyaz and vichar.

Hmm! Do you know that energy in marketing is always on the higher
entropy state? :)

Which is why it would require 'work' to re-channel that.

Incidentally - being able to sing a 'note to note copy of UK' vibhas
can be viewed a high praise for a young singer...

That sounds like a good idea. In my opinion, though, an artist's

On the other hand, he seems quite at home in the NaTyageet genre. Here
are two such links with him singing a couple of famous Dinanath
Mangeshkar renditions.
