1: Raga Gambheeravani: I do believe this one in janya in Naaganandini.
The song I have heard is "Sadamatheem".
2: Raga KarnaRanjani: The "popular"song "VanchaToluna" is in this raga, I
believe. I also think this raga has been used in an 80s Hindi film song sung
by Lata Mangeshkar "Tumhe dekhti hoon, to lagta hai aise, ke jaise yugon
se.." Music composed by Rajesh Roshan. Some flighty flute pieces in this
song, to jog your memories.. Thanks in advance. Arvind V.

There is always a limitation of the notation in expressing the actual "bhava"
of the raagam. That is, the ArOhanam & avarOHanam are sometimes not
sufficient to point out the nuances, difference of the raagam with other
closely allied raagams, etc. It is a good place to start, anyway.

"tumhe dekhti hooN..." is composed by Jaidev. I didn't know Raju
Roshan had 're-mastered' it. (*)
The uThAva of the number allies with Raga Shivaranjani, but then the
komal nishAd is introduced, followed by the shuddha madhyam, followed
by the komal dhaivat - M (shuddha) n and d are foreign to Shivaranjani.
The karnATaka (Ashok, please take note) Karnaranjini has all these
notes but I doubt the rAga is elucidated in this composition. There
is another old melody found in granthas such as Sangeeta Parijata,
the moribund Raga Kollahas, that is akin to Shivaranjani but with
an additional komal nishAd.
So "tumhe dekhti hooN" is _based_ in Shivaranjani with the usual
disclaimers about contamination attached.
An approximate outline of the mukhDA is as follows (M=shuddha);
approximate because it is hard to capture in written notation
(not without cluttering the screen) the nuance Lata and Jaidev
bring to the melody.

(*) There is the story of the colourful German conductor Hans von Bulow.
A young composer asked for his opinion on a new score he (the young
composer) had written. Seeing that it was a patchwork drawn from several
well-known earlier works von Bulow replied, 'I ALWAYS liked it.'
For Raga Karnaranjani there is now a popular contemprory krithi by Ambujam
Krishna "Om Namo Narayana". You can find information on the Raga at

Another great composition in Karna Ranjani is 'Deena Saranyane - Devaki
Baalane' by Neela RaamaMurthy. There is a wonderful recording by Bombay
Jayashree.
