>lakumikara: <remover of obstacles> ?
doesn't seem right. *probably* it means "... bless me".
>amaravinuta: ?
amara's are the ones who never die - the God's. Amarapati,
for example, refers to Indra - the leader of God's. Amaravinuta
is one who is obedient to the God's; as opposed to Rahu, Kethu
et al., I guess.
>siddhacarana:
one who worships (through daily japa's, tapa's, ... etc.)
>ganasevita:
Ganapathi is served by the (Shiva) Gana's. root ("datu") sev-
means "serve".
>siddhivinakya:
One who grants `karya siddhi' ...
>sakala vidya adi pujita: <I dont know how to parse this>
either "ultimate (shreshtta) among the ultimates" - "vidya"= shreshtta,
the ultimate, worshipped first among all the vidya's; or, the one
who is "in-charge" various branches of 'learning', and hence first
worshipped at the beginning of learning any of them.

I don't know if gaNapati is described in our epics to be of a
particular color.
Here it says "the one whose color is red (whatever sindhura)".
Actually, the standard slOka about gaNapati :-
"Shuklaam(+)ambaradharam vishNum ShaShi varNam ..."
describes gaNapati to be of "ShaShi varNam " i.e., the color of
moon. Now we see, "sindhura varNa".

kari : elephant,
kari vadana: elephant faced

I think, lamba does not mean pot !
kumbhOdara (kumbha = pot) would have meant "pot bellied one".
lambOdara : lamba (+) udara : the "big bellied one."
> lakumikara: <remover of obstacles> ?
?? (Are there any kannaDa words in this "lakumikara" ? )
> ambasuta: the son of parvathi,

vinuta : the one who is praised by "somebody", as in "tyaagaraaja vinuta"
amara_vinuta : who is praised by gods.

sidhdha + acharaNa (??). Who follows (acharaNa) the "sidhdhi"s ?

ganasevita : being served by gaNas.

sakala vidya : all learnings
aadi poojita : first worshipped (aadi = first)
sakala vidya adi pujita : the one worshipped at the beginning of all learnings
> sarvottamma: the supreme being
sarvottamma: sarva (all) + uttama (best)
"The best among all" may be a better translation.
Regards,
Suresh.

According to the story I know, GaNapathi was supposed to be made of
mud (or soil) and given life by Parvathi. Assuming it was red soil,
the name Sindhura varNa seems to be appropriate.

Yes, I think. The word lakumi is derived from the sanskrit word Laksmi.
Hence lakumi means wealth. The word meaning of lakumikara should be
one who has wealth in his 'kara'. In other words, this means one who
gives wealth.
sree gananatha : Vinayaka is the lord of the pramadha ganas ,hence this name.
sindhuravarna : one who has a fair & bright complexion.
karunasaagara : one who has infinite karuna.
kari vadana : one with the face of an elephant.
Lambodara : one with a huge belly.
lakumikara : Lakumi is the Vikruthi form of Laghima, one of the ashta siddhis,
and Vinayaka is the one who grants that siddhi.
Ambasuta : The son of Amba i.e. Parvathi.
Amara vinutha : One whom the amaras (the devas) revere & pray.
siddhachaarana : He who governs the siddhis.
ganasevitha : Here gana means human beings, and Vinayaka is worshipped by
them.Seva also means worship.
siddhivinayaka : One who removes obstacles and grants success.
sakalavid, adi pujitha : One who knows everything, one who is worshipped before any
other diety.
sarvotthama : The best of all.
the namo namo : My salutations to him.
Sreedhar.
1. Oh! Lord of all things, red in colour, who is ocean in mercy, having
a big stomach, Oh! son of Parvathi, you are worshiped by all.
2. SidddhAs and ChAranAs offer worship to you. My pranAms to you
without whom ashta sidhis are possible.
3. You are worshipped at the beginning of all arts. My pranAms to you
who is superior to all Gods.

>Well, this sloka explicitly refers to Vishnu, who is not Ganapati. It is
>surprising and sometimes amusing that people assume that it refers to
>Ganapati, because of the words 'sarva vighnopasantaye'.
The word `viShNu' here means that which is present everywhere-
doesn't necessarily mean the Lord Vishnu. This is an explanation
given by H.H.Paramacharya himself.
>In popular tradition, Ganapati is depicted as red in colour. My
>grandfather used to insist that the clay murti we used during Ganesh
>chaturthi be red in colour.
The song`rakta gaNapati'(dIhShitar?).The epic says that gaNapathi kills
a demon named sindhUra-hence called sindhUra ganapati. He is transformed into
sandal(yellow).
shlOkAs like `sindhUrar varNa ramyAya..',singhUra varNam dvibhujam
gaNesham...' arde quite popular.
